Got someone in your life who's driving you nuts? Make the person chill out with this tried-and-true quickie spell that has been around for years in one form or another.

Freezer Spells for Many Purposes

The use of ice, or freezers, is not an uncommon one. Many magical traditions utilize freezer spells for a variety of magical purposes. In hoodoo and conjure, one of the most popular uses of a freezer spell, which is also called an icebox spell, is to get someone to keep their mouth shut during a court case or investigation, or to silence a gossip or vengeful rival.

Cat Yronwoode of Lucky Mojo says

"Anyone whose name you prepare and freeze in this way will be frozen out. If you put your lover's name in the freezer, you have frozen him (or his sexuality) out of your life; if you put the names of your rivals in the freezer, you have frozen them out of your life."

Cast Your Own Freezer Spell

A freezer spell, or icebox spell, is one of the easiest workings you can cast. It's a great way to get someone to stop gossiping about you, harassing you, or giving you a hard time at work.

You'll need a freezer bag with a zipper seal or some other container that you can fill with water and seal. If you use a glass jar, make sure it's freezer-safe. You'll also need a piece of paper with the person's name on it, and some consecrated water, vinegar, or even urine. Write the person’s name on the piece of paper and place it in the zipper bag. Fill the bag with the consecrated water and then seal it. Place the bag in your freezer, and as the person’s name freezes up inside the ice, they too should “chill out.”

In some traditions, particularly those to stop a gossip, practitioners use beef or other animal tongue or a lemon—representing sour words—with a slit cut in the middle. The paper is inserted in the slit, then the whole thing is bound up with twine and placed in the icebox to freeze. If you're trying to freeze up someone whose sexual exploits ought to be kept in check, use a fruit or vegetable shaped like human genitals—consider the shape of a peach or a zucchini, and you get the idea.

Monika, an eclectic pagan from Maine, says,

“I’ve used this spell in a number of situations, and it works on the principle of sympathetic magic—like attracts like. By putting the person’s name in the freezer, you’re essentially freezing their bad behavior towards you, or whoever else they’ve been bothering. It’s a good way to get someone to leave you alone, without going through the drama of a hexing. Think of it as a quickie version of a binding spell. When the person is out of your life or has stopped giving you a hard time, you can thaw the bag of ice out and pitch it.”

Fergus is a Celtic pagan in Southern California and used this working to get rid of a pesky ex-lover.

"Seriously, the guy wouldn't leave me alone. He never did anything illegal or dangerous but engaged in some behavior that made it clear he wasn't acknowledging that things were over between us. I didn't want any harm to come to him, I just wanted him out of my life. I'd heard about the chill-out spell and gave it a shot, and the next time I saw him, he was actually apologetic for not being able to let things go. Since then, we've managed to rebuild a healthy friendship, with established boundaries, and I know I don't have to worry about seeing him drive by my house or drunk-texting my parents anymore."

Other Spells to Try

If you're looking for other simple spells, try adding some of these to your repertoire.

  • In some magical traditions, spellwork components are contained in a box. Construct a spell box of your own to include all of your magical ingredients.
  • Sometimes we have people in our lives who cause problems, and this is where a banishing spell comes in handy. You can try a number of different methods; just make sure that the one you use doesn’t violate any of your own personal moral or ethical guidelines.
  • You may want to do workings to ensure the protection of home, property, and people. There are a number of simple ways you can do protection spells.
  • Much like the freezer spell, a magical binding is simply a spell or working that restrains someone metaphysically, preventing that person from doing something. It is often used to keep an individual from causing harm to self or others.
