Do I have to spend a lot of money on magical items?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Do I have to spend a lot of money on magical items?
I'm at the point in my study of Wicca where I feel ready to try my hand at spell work. However, I'm on a budget, and can't go out and buy a bunch of stuff at the local Witchy Store. Are there other things I can use that I might already have, or do I have to use "magical items"?

Answer:

First of all, congratulations on reaching the point where you feel comfortable doing spellwork and ritual - that's a big step.

Second, here's a really important bit of information to keep in mind: there is magic in everything. While there are some people who will tell you flat out that you have to buy the Official Wiccan Spell Kit Ingredients and those are the only things that will ever, I'm here to tell you that's not the case. The trick is to learn -- and train yourself -- to think magically all the time. Not just when you're preparing for a ritual, but even when you're walking through the grocery store, cleaning the cat box, or dropping the kids off at soccer practice. Train yourself to do this, and you'll be able to find magical uses for the most mundane of items.

In fact, over on the main blog for this site, we've got a weekly exercise called Magical Mondays. It's where I post a photo of a not-so-magical item, and readers chime in with their ideas for magical uses. To get an idea of some really outside-the-box magical thinking, read some of our Magical Mondays topics:
