Silent & majestic, yet promises of a new beginning to come with the thaw!
Three things came to mind in rapid succession: 1) Old paintings of hell from back when people viewed it as a frozen waste. I don’t know why, I never got that with any other black and white winter photo. 2) A scene from the mini series The Tenth Kingdom. It’s a must see by the way. But this reminded me of when they were underground in the Snow White scene. 3) This may have been more prompted by the previous comment but The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. All three rather ominous, pivotal vignettes. Maybe I should be discussing this with a psychologist! lol
It’s funny you mention an underground scene — to take this picture, I had actually climbed about 75 feet down into a steep ravine. I was standing on a rock in a frozen creek to snap the photo, and the sides of the ravine rose up on either side of me, and I remember having a feeling of BEING underground…
’specially when I had to climb back up through 16″ of snow!

There’s beauty in cold ice, too.
Great visuals in your photo, Patti! Those tree stumps even look iconic. My first thought was “stalagmites.”
How lovely. It’s so easy to imagine the stillness of this scene - perfect for meditating.
AWESOME photograph! I imagined a creature taking shelter within the cavern…I think it’s interesting to see how many different views, and comments, can come from just one photograph. THANK YOU for sharing this with us, Patti!
BB!
Patti,
I am jealous, here in south Cali, it has been 80*F all week! We need the rain!
