Reader Question: Did I Meet a Goddess at the Gym?

Monday August 25, 2008
Reader BahamaMama writes in with an interesting question. She says, "I had a weird experience at the gym today. While I was using the cycle, I found myself sort of zoning out... and I swear, I think I had an encounter with a deity, with her talking to me and everything. It was almost as though I left my body and went somewhere else. Am I cracking up, or do goddesses actually speak to big beautiful women on recumbent bikes? Was I raising spiritual energy as well as generating physical energy?"

Believe it or not, what you're describing isn't all that unusual. Apparently it happens more often than you'd expect -- I've experienced something similar myself, and it's a bit disconcerting the first time it takes place, believe me. For a few ideas about this phenomenon, read FAQ: Magical Energy and Exercise. Readers, what about you? Ever bump into the divine at an unexpected place or time?

Whenever I need her, She is always there, guiding and gently whispering things to me. I’ve walked my path for two years now, and I’m looking forward to learning and experiencing new things.
Blessed be!

Congratulations! You’ve had a mystical experience. One way to enter a trance state is through physical exertion — what do you think all that dancing is about in tradional relious cultures? Be sure to write down whatever you remember being said or otherwise communicated. It may not mean anything to you now, but likely will in the future.

If we wanted to send in our own question or something to that effect how would we do that?
Thanks for having this site Patti, I love it!

Sunwillow, you can email me any time with a question at http://paganwiccan.about.com/mpremail.htm. Before you do, though, I’d recommend reading over the FAQs on that page, and also using the Search feature on the site - it’s possible that your question has already been asked and answered.

You can also post your questions on the Forums, to get feed back from not just me but other readers as well.

Although I don’t post every single question I get on the blog, I do try to respond to people as quickly as possible :)

(9) Runesmith says:

Believe it or not, She also comes to men, if we ask nicely enough.

Long ago when I was first discovering Her, and I was reading everything I could find and wanting to believe, I got into the habit of repeating a prayer to Inanna in my mind to keep out other worries (of which there were plenty).

And one day in the woods I was enjoying the sunshine and recalling an argument in a Dianic magazine I’d been reading over whether the Sun was male, and thinking how meaningless it was if She is in everything, and suddenly it wasn’t an academic theory, it was a fact. I could feel Her in the earth under me and the trees around me, and the sun and wind touched me with love and told me I was loved and held. It didn’t last long, but from then on I didn’t need to believe: I knew. When I came back my wife knew when she saw me that something big had happened: she said I was glowing.

Oh, and if you want a divine revelation along with a religious experience, as She was leaving I felt a moment of shame that She had come to me when I’d just been felling trees. And it seemed to me that She laughed and said “Silly, that’s what men are for!”

Wow, that’s cool! :)

Hope it happens again for you, if you liked it…

I can understand why it could happen, meditation, drumming, exercise. Repititve motion ties up the conscious mind, it gets bored, if we stick with it, we tap into higher power. At lest this is what I got reading Out of the Shadows.

Exercise, I can see it now, a link between a spiritual moment, and getting healthy; something the gym industry could start marketing. hahah!
