WBC Hatemongers to Protest Carlin Funeral

Our favorite fanatical family is as it again. The hatemongers at Westboro Baptist Church have announced that they plan to protest the funeral of comedian George Carlin, who died last week at the age of 71. Carlin, an avowed atheist, came under all kinds of fire during his lifetime, and seems to be catching just as much flack now that he's dead. Fred Phelps and his clan of bigots are going to show up and cause a scene at Carlin's memorial service, and their rambling press release refers to him as a "potty-mouth", apparently in hopes of appealing to the pre-school demographic amongst their flock. They also remind us that he "made lots of money making fun of God." Well, yeah, but he made fun of everything else too -- that's one of the things that made Carlin so brilliant. According to WBC, Carlin will be joined in hell by Jerry Seinfeld and Keith Olbermann.

Goodness, how can anyone protest a funeral? Too late, guys, he’s already dead! I’m not sure what they hope to accomplish with this…I always knew the WBC had no sense of humor.
Kind of a kudos to Carlin, though…I think he would have appreciated the endless amount of comedic material this kind of situation would provide!

I ended up going to their website to find out more about the group, and decided to see what one of their sermons was like. If you want you can listen too: http://www.westborobaptistchurch.com/audio/sermons/sermons.html In the first sermon I listened to(date: 20080622) at about 2:10 the preacher says “If your Church has not been raided, you are not preaching the Gospel!” It is just absolutely absurd that people follow this man.

These people are disgusting. i just wonder how long it will be before they sink even lower, and begin to branch out from the “Morally Abominable” disruption of funerals. Before we know it, they will have moved into the territory of “Utterly Depraved.”

i went to the website and i went thourgh some of the songs and i am sick to my stomach! my husband is in the USMC and i cant believe that they would sing like that, when my husband is fighting for THIER right to sing that song. it hurts my spirit to know that i have to live side by side with people who want to hurt others around them. its awful!
People (if you can call them people) such as these WBC are the apitamy of low, can’t even have the decency to allow people to mourn before starting their holier than thou hatefulness.Discusting. But, I digress, these types of “people” should not even be given the honor of recognition. That’s my wholehearted opinion.
I’ve followed these guys for a number of years. In my opinion, their actions are atrocious, but just the same I suspect they are true believers and believe they are doing what is right. Unfortunately, the world is full of true believers, thus events like 911 and the Oklahoma City bombing, and all the other senseless acts of violence in the world perpetuate. It’s almost as though we humans have little in the way of common realities.
Phelps vitriolic hatred nullifies anything else he says before or after that, as far as I’m concerned. To “preach” claiming to be a Christian; and then promote HATE - whatever you say after that it totally invalidated.
He claims to be a “Christian Pastor” however he has NOTHING to do with Christ. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, nowhere in Bible text is Christ advocating HATRED toward others. This hate-monger and his wacko followers’ showing up at funeral demonstrations might get press, but it is merely callous theater.
Back in ‘96 in Nashville, on the day of the funeral for Al Gore Sr., (vice pres Al Gore jr.s father) Phelps showed up with a few followers with large signs that said “GOD HATES FAGS Romans 9:13″ because, according to Phelps, his son “sold his soul to the fag agenda.” His followers join up they enjoy telling people to “go to hell.” Period.
“Christians” like the Phelps crew make me proud to be a Wiccan.
I know not all Christians are like that - I have been in a loving relationship with two fairly devout but open-minded Catholics for eight years. But this makes me want to take a page from the Romans and start feeding the cats again…
Yeah, if nothing else, I’m happy to say that Phelps and his gang don’t speak for any of the Christians that I know.
Sadly, he just speaks louder than most of the rest of them, but I think it’s important not to classify him as representative of all people of the Christian faith.

See, now, this illustrates the difference between a comedian and a clown.
George Carlin was a comedian - the members of Westboro Baptist Church are clowns.
Both are funny, though Carlin was funny in an original, insightful way, and the WBC are funny in a ridiculous, pathetic way.
Still, you gotta recognize and encourage comedy, even the more amateurish attempts. Carlin would have wanted it that way.
On one hand, I personally find this group silly, distasteful and in short: a cult….but they have their beliefs and it’s not for me to tell them they have no right to do what they do - as much as I dislike what they do, it’s the dark-side of the freedoms we’re given - which Carlin so often ranted about and joked about and loved so much that he took full advantage - which leads me to my other hand (stop it…..hehehe…..) I suspect the Cardinal in him (see the movie Dogma sometime if you haven’t already…) will be waving his driver at the protesters and mooning them and shouting things like, “if I didn’t have protesters at my funeral, I didn’t do anything right” and “MAN I hope there’s bacon where I’m goin’!”
Whatever he believed, may the road rise up to meet him and the wind be ever at his back. He spoke his truth and not many people today have the courage to do that. HUGE respect to him for that. I doubt the protesters could say as much.
Get a life guys! If you weren’t so insecure in your own beliefs, a comic wouldn’t be so threatening to you!
I also noticed something strange. I agree with everything freeluna wrote about “True Believers,” but i find it ironic that these WBC people only “preach out against” something when one of their diabolical schemes goes awry.
Take for instance the fact that that WBC family only started their “God Hates Fags”(Their words, Not mine.) Bull-crap after one of Phelps’ family members lost an election to a Pro-Gay candidate.

Why do we allow the WBW’s any air time a space in print or in our thoughts? These are small minded people who have a, I don’t know what I can call Phelps that isn’t derogatory, leading them. Personally I think Phelps is a closet homosexual and there may be many in his group who are also,why else protest so much. The lady doth protests to much, or something like that. This group is not representative of mainline Christians. They are a hate-mongering cult. The absurdity of their ideas is evidenced by their ‘protesting’ a funeral service. Makes one wonder how their God of Mercy feels about them?
George Carlin will know they are there, and that’s all that matters. Hopefully, George will rise, levitate, to the occasion, as he always did! The Universe will take care of the rest. The more press that we give idiots such as these, the more damage they will do. I, for one, will not let their name come from my lips, because that will give them the notoriety they seek. So, shhhhh!!!! Let’s decide they do not exist, and let the Universe, and the police,take care of them as it sees fit. And, it will.
Just remember everyone, that they are creating their own Karma. I don’t want to be in a 1000 mile radius of them when Karma comes to visit. Ouch!

Im a veteren and along time fan of George Carlin. When these jerks were out protesting fallen soldiers, I made a suggestion, and I’ll make it again. Someone needs to drive by with a liquid manuer spreader and have a little ‘accidental’ drive by spraying.(oops) Hopefully these a#%holes will all have their mouths open.
As far as gays in the military, as long as they hang tuff and shoot straight, I wouldnt care.

I am a George Carlin fan and didn’t follow him because of his beliefs but because I enjoyed his comedy. So these people need to wake up and smell the roses because one day karma is going to bite them in the butt.

You’re forgetting that God also hates America (their other website). Let’s get this straight: WBC does not represent Christians. A Christian is a follower of Christ, and these people are nothing of the sort. We don’t need to be Christians ourselves to recognize that disjoint (as I’m sure most of you all know).
They also protested the funerals of the Kirkwood Aldermen who were shot in the City Hall shootings a few months ago… Because God hates Kirkwood and Missouri. I still have the press release.

I don’t agree with their message but they do have as much as a right to say what they want to say. The Constitution protects everyone and that includes WB members.

Not only did George mock God during his career, he downright HATED God. What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? You want to know what’s sad? People who will follow George into hell because they thought his meaningless hatred towards God was funny. It makes me cringe every time I see someone say “He’s probably making jokes in heaven.” What a joke. Evil people call evil good and good evil.
