Getting Started

Create your own coven banner in a few easy steps!

If your group or coven attends public events, it's not a bad idea to have your own banner. You can hang this up so people know who you are, and it also helps to make you look a bit more organized -- groups with a logo or banner appear more "official" to some folks. Anyway, making your own banner is really easy, if you've got a little bit of creative skill. It's also a great magical project -- think of the energy you can put into a creation like this!

If you're not part of an established tradition, you can still make one of these -- select a logo for yourself, or for the deities you honor, or for your family's heritage.

First, you'll need to decide what sort of material you want to use. If your sewing skill consists of knowing what a sewing machine looks like, and no more, then you may want to use craft felt -- that way you don't have to hem or stitch. In fact, you can hold the entire thing together with craft glue. On the other hand, if you're familiar with sewing, and understand how to use things like Heat-n-Bond, you can use cottons or other lighter weight fabric. Egyptian cotton is perfect for this project, but quilter's cottons work well too.

In addition to fabric for your background, you'll need:

  • Fabric for your coven's logo
  • Heat-n-Bond or similar adhesive product
  • Fabric paint in your choice of color
  • Two dowel rods
  • A ribbon or cord
