Many scholars believe that Stonehenge was constructed as a temple to the gods. It is certainly the most famous of the stone circles still in existence, and at the time of the summer and winter solstices, the sun is in perfect alignment with the placement of the stones. The positioning of the uprights and lintels at Stonehenge creates a complex prehistoric calendar. Today, many Pagans and Wiccans make a summer pilgrimage to Stonehenge, so they can celebrate the solstice at what one might call the world's largest altar.
