MLK: A Day of Remembrance
Monday January 21, 2008
"Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness." ~~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
If you live in the US, today is the day our government has set aside in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. In recognition of the 40th anniversary of his assassination, the Corporation for National and Community Service is calling for an initiative called “40 Days of Nonviolence: Building the Beloved Community.” In this program, the group challenges every one of us to take part in a service project. Consider the things you can do this year to help make your community better -- host a neighborhood cleanup, organize a food or clothing drive for the needy, or donate your time to a local charity.
On this day, we owe it to ourselves and to others to think about the changes our country has seen since Dr. King's assassination. He had a dream that some day all men would be treated equally. We haven't quite achieved that yet, but we're working on it. If we stand up for not only our own rights, but also for the rights of those different than us, maybe some day Dr. King's dream will truly be achieved.
