March 26 is the anniversary of the birth of Joseph Campbell, folklorist and author. Born in 1904, Campbell was the one who itemized the concept of the "hero's journey" in folklore and myth. This archetypical adventure format is seen in everything from Greek mythology to Norse eddas to the Star Wars films. Campbell's book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, details all the necessary components for a story to be a true "hero's journey." Campbell died in 1987, and a year later, PBS aired a series in which he collaborated with Bill Moyers, called The Power of Myth. A companion book to the series is also available, containing transcripts. If you've never had a chance to watch or read these, see if you can find copies somewhere, because it's well worth the effort: Profile of Joseph Campbell

I actually found The Power of Myth at my local Barnes & Noble, soi it’s not that hard to find. Also The Hero with a Thousand Faces is readily available on Amazon.
