The name Dorothy Clutterbuck is probably familiar to you if you've done any reading at all on the works or life of Gerald Gardner, the founder of today's Wiccan movement. Gardner claimed that he was initiated into the New Forest coven of witches by Dorothy around 1939. Later, Doreen Valiente indicated that it wasn't Dorothy who initiated Gardner at all, but that she was indeed present at the time.
What's interesting about Dorothy is that during her lifetime, there was no public indication at all that she was a witch, let alone part of a coven. She lived a quiet English country life as a conservative, church-going widow. Some scholars have speculated that Gardner made up the story about Dorothy. Regardless, January 19 is the anniversary of Dorothy Clutterbuck's birthday, so whether she was really a witch or not, happy birthday, Dorothy! Profile of Dorothy Clutterbuck
