It's winter in the northern hemisphere, and that means it's time to burrow into a warm kitchen with some comfort food. By the time the chilly nights of Yule arrive, there's a lot to be said for keeping a big cauldron of something warm on the stovetop - and that's where wassail comes in handy!
Pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, so that it rhymes with "fossil," wassail is a tasty warm concoction that you can brew up in a crockpot or on the stovetop. Originally, it was made with lots of eggs, but tastes changed over the centuries. Although there are a number of different recipes, this one calls for apple cider as a base. You can also add a nip of brandy, just to warm the bones.
Mix up a pot of something good for Yule, and get the winter juices flowing with a warm mug of wassail -- it'll warm the heart, body, and soul.
