Cultivating Gratitude

Much like anything else in life, many people have learned that they get back what they give out. Whether you call that Karma, the Law of Attraction, or just basic common sense, it typically holds that if you put effort into something, you will reap the rewards and benefits of that effort. This time of year, with the holidays looming not too far in the distance, there's typically a great deal of discussion about thankfulness and gratitude.

I learned years ago that I can be grateful for the blessings in my life each day, and not just designate that One Thursday in November as a day to give thanks. What am I thankful for right now this minute? I've got three great kids who are happy, healthy, funny and smart, and a husband who puts up with all of my major personality disorders. I've got a great job, a roof over my head, and wonderful friends that I love very much. It's a crispy November afternoon, and I'm watching my two ridiculous dogs romp in the leaves outside. I've recovered fairly well from a nasty back injury last spring, and my life is good. These may be all very simple things, but they're the things that matter to me personally.

Want to embrace a feeling of gratitude in your own life, but not sure how to start? Here are ten simple ideas on ways you can show gratitude -- and cultivate more good things to come your way: Ten Ways to Show Gratitude.

Meanwhile, share with the rest of us in the Comments section. What are three things you're thankful for, right this minute? GO!

Today I am grateful for living in a beautiful neighborhood full of trees, and for the brilliant autumn colors. I am grateful that I have the funniest children on the planet, who all love to talk to me and share their lives with me. I am grateful that this is the year I have discovered the Craft, found a great tradition to follow, and that my search to find the Divine in my life is over.

I discovered the Craft a couple years ago, but this past year I self-dedicated. It was a very persona and life-changing event. Congratulations on finding the path right for you.

May the God and Goddess bless you on your new path.

I am thankful for my wonderful fiance, while more agnostic than anything else, supports me and my Wiccan faith. He even participates in ritual with me for Sabbats.

I am also thankful for my cat, who shows me unconditional love each day. I love to watch her play with little pieces of trash on the floor, and I love to pet her.

Finally, I am thankful for the God and Goddess who have always had my best interests at heart. They are the reason I am engaged, and they are gradually showing me that I have chosen the correct path.

May you all be blessed as much as I have been in just 24 years (my entire life)!!

I am grateful that even though I have been unemployed for almost a year for the second time in three years, I still have good food to eat, a home and my car (if I lost my car, I would not be able to find a new job, I’d be stuck). Also, I am grateful for the Fall colors this year, which have been georgeous this year!

(18) Lacran says:

Despite some very hateful management at work (I’ve had to speak with the union twice this year about religious discrimination twice this year) I’m thankful to have any job at all. I’m also very happy to have friends that are willing to celebrate some of my religious holidays with me even if they have no clue whats going on or what we’re celebrating (I think most of them just like celebrating).

(19) Larry says:

I am thankful that I still have a brother left in my immediate family. On Samhain I received the gift of a van from him, which now carries the name of the Goddess, Hecate. Thankful for my wife, my son, and my daughter. Thankful for not being hungry and for having a roof

. . . many others are not so lucky. Lets do more than remember them in our prayers and rituals this year: lets share some of our good fortune with someone less fortunate. (I’ve been that person before)

Blessings To All!

(22) Katrina says:

I’m thankful that, although my aunt had a stroke on Sunday, and passed away late last night, that my family was all here to share in their grief, their memories, and in Thanksgiving. It’s the first time since I was 9, and I’m now 37, that we have all been able to be together. I believe that my aunt held on somewhere in there so that we could celebrate her life and our lives as we did. I am thankful that the rest of us are relatively healthy after my mothers and my husbands lung cancer and my cancer scare, just in the last two years. And, I’m thankful that my 10 year old daughter is growing up so wonderfully. I’m so proud to be able to say that I’m her mother.
