While many of us Pagans celebrate the holiday called Samhain, for some of us, it's also the secular event of Halloween. The tradition of trick-or-treating isn't quite as old as the holiday itself, but it's certainly been around for a while. Personally, I'll dress up as darn near anything if it means people will feed me candy (last year I was a toddler pageant queen, this year I think I'm going to be Katniss Everdeen). Here's how this unique custom evolved: Trick or Treat!

Hi Patti! I love reading your articles. I just have a question about your statement “girls stayed inside, playing games of divination”. Was that looked down upon? It seems like a pretty witchy thing to do(witchiness is good. i’m just not so sure about how people would see it back then)
Hi Maria! Actually, it was viewed as reasonably harmless fun, from everything I’ve read. It was the sort of thing where girls would peel an apple to figure out their future husband’s initial, or they’d look into a mirror at midnight in hopes of seeing their true love’s face, that sort of thing. It doesn’t appear to have been anything that was really looked down upon from a religious perspective, although I’m sure there were some areas where the Old Folks frowned upon shenanigans like this!
