From our Diggin' Archaeology files, here's a neat find out of the island of Sicily. An ancient temple has been unearthed, and the contents include offerings to Demeter, the grain goddess connected to changing seasons. The temple, which experts have dated to around the 6th century b.c.e., could be the oldest at the Selinunte location. Researchers have also located also the remains of a central colonnade, pottery shards, and a long vessel decorated with grazing animals.
The story of Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, may be one of the best known of all the Greek myths. Persephone, caught the eye of Hades, god of the underworld. When Hades abducted Persephone and took her back to the underworld, Demeter's grief caused the crops on earth to die and go dormant.
