Tattoos of the Dead

This is fascinating to me, both as someone who has quite a bit of body art, and as someone who is interested in the things that may or may not happen to the human body after death. The fabulously-named Gemma Angel is a researcher who has been documenting the mysteries found in a collection of tattooed human skins acquired by the Wellcome Collection nearly a century ago.

Angel says on her website, "Working specifically with a collection of 300 such objects owned by the Wellcome Collection, my work explores the historical practice of collecting and preserving tattoos, looking at the origins and purpose of the collection, as well as the iconography of the tattoos."

The Wellcome Collection is a London museum specializing in medical artifacts and unusual bits of scientific detritus.

Anyway, if you get a chance, and aren't too squicked out, scroll through some of the images of the skins that Angel has been working with. It's an amazing look at things we don't get to see very often.
