Hungary's New Restrictions on Religion

On January 1, 2012, Hungary's new constitution went into effect, and there are some pretty tight restrictions on religious freedoms that have a lot of people worried. The new laws, which withdraws official recognition and tax exempt status from over 300 religious denominations, effectively strip many Hungarians of their liberties, and gives a significantly increased amount of power to the small government.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban's center-right Fidesz party has radically changed the makeup of the country's rule, and thousands of Hungarians have been protesting in the streets of Budapest.

Included on the list of no-longer-recognized: all denominations of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, as well as several Catholic orders, Episcopalians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Methodists and others. Hungary also has a significant number of Pagans, and they are going to be impacted greatly by the inclusion of conservative Christian policies into their country's government.

Taking the tax exemption away from all Religions might help fix the US economy. But that is probably another discussion.
