Why Botanicas Matter to the Latino Community

HuffPo has a great article about the small botanicas that are found in America's Latino communities, and the purpose that such businesses serve. For those of you who have never been in one, the typical botanica is a mishmash of many things - candles, incense, spell kits, herbs and more, all flavored with the spirituality of the Afro-Caribbean and Meso-American religions followed by many of our country's Hispanic immigrants.

It's not uncommon to walk into a botanica and find statues of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin side by side with images of the Orishas, the deities honored by followers of Santeria. Reporter Ray Sanchez takes a look at why, despite the tough economy, these businesses are flourishing. As one might expect, people who are struggling financially often turn to magic and the gods for assistance, and while botanicas do sell spell kits and magical supplies, they also offer hope and guidance for their clientele - and those are useful things indeed to find these days.
