The trial of James Arthur Ray began today in an Arizona courtroom, and he faces three counts of reckless manslaughter. The charges stem from an incident we've discussed several times here at About Pagan/Wiccan; back in October 2009, three people died in a so-called sweat lodge ceremony run by Ray at one of his self-help retreats. Ray was arrested in February 2010.
The retreat was held in Sedona, at the Angel Valley Retreat Center, and Ray's lawyers are arguing that the blame lies with Angel Valley. The defense team wrote in 2009, "Mr. Ray and his team relied on Angel Valley to provide a safe environment." Prosecutors say Ray was reckless, and his negligence led to the deaths of two people in the sweat lodge and a third several days later. Kirby Brown and James Shore died on October 8, and Lizbeth Marie Neuman died on October 17.
I'll post updates as they're made available, but if you have InSession (formerly Court TV), apparently you can watch the trial live.
