Some sad news comes to us this morning from Isaac and Phaedra Bonewits' Facebook page:
This morning, August 12, 2010 at approximately 8 AM ET, Isaac Bonewits passed away peacefully in his sleep. All his brothers and sisters arrived at his side last night. His family and friends surround him now.
Isaac Bonewits was a Pagan author and educator, as well as being the founder of Ár nDraíocht Féin (ADF), one of the largest Neopagan Druid groups in existence. Born in 1949 in Michigan to Catholic parents, attended UC Berkeley, where he was able to design his own course of study, and graduated with a degree in magic -- the first (and last) person ever to do so! He is survived by wife Phaedra, son Arthur Lipp-Bonewits, and thousands of friends and fans around the world.
In early August, Isaac announced that all of his scholarly papers would be donated to the University of California, Santa Barbara library and their American Religions Collection.

Thoughts and prayers going out to Isaac and his family -- may his crossing be a peaceful one. Isaac, your contributions to modern Paganism will allow your light to burn for a long time to come. You will be greatly missed.

It’s almost as if the meteor shower Thursday night was planned as a tribute to him. Blessings and prayers to his life partner, Phaedra.
Blessings!
I will miss his witty commentary
I will forever be grateful to Isaac for saying the simplest yet, for me, the most profound thing. I was at the Starwood Festival in the early ’90′s, and I was having a difficult time trying to make my spirituality fit into what was being touted by too many as “the right way to practice” wicca/paganism. I was not sure if I should say anything to him after one of his workshops, and today, I am glad I did. I voiced my concerns and Isaac looked me in the eye, and very quietly said “It’s all good.” How liberating, and how very true! Thank you Isaac Bonewits for that, and for signing my book. (He asked me my name, and I said, just Peggy, plain and simple. He signed it “To Peggy, neither plain nor simple, but a force to be reckoned with!” Safe journey Isaac!!!
It was truly a sad loss for our community. His works to pave the way for us will live on, as well as all of his amazingly insightful writings…..He will be missed…..Rest in Peace dear Isaac!!!
Isaac’s brother is a founding member of MCoW Condolences may be left for the Webmaster at mcow.org. May Isaac’s stay in Summerland refresh and renew his Spirit. Bright Blessings.
I developed into a Pagan after reading his seminal work, “Real Magic”, but didn’t get to meet him in person until I moved to Berkeley. There, I’m honored to say, I sang for several of his ceremonies. I later heard his warning of how he was systemically poisoned by some bad vitamins made in China, and I can’t help but think that this poisoning later contributed to his death.
As we honor Isaac’s memory, let’s not forget his family who have been financially ruined by medical bills. There’s a site on Facebook where people can contribute to his family.
Let’s also boycott all poisonous good from China.
