Minister Pickets High School "Demon" Mascot

By , About.com GuideAugust 12, 2010

Follow me on:

From the Someone Has Too Much Free Time files, a Georgia pastor is complaining that his local high school's demon mascot encourages children to be evil. Pastor Donald Crosby says he's standing up for Jesus by protesting the mascot, and that the city should repent for its praise of the Devil. Crosby was arrested for protesting without a permit, even though law enforcement personnel offered to help him get one, which he refused.

Wonder if he's friendly with the Texas fundamentalists who got upset about their school's Jolly Roger flag?

I don’t see how seeing the image would encourage evil. That’s like saying that a pastor teaching about the devil encourages evil… The logic is faulty.

I also love this quote from the article:

“I don’t scare easily. Lock me up as many times as you have to lock me up. Even kill me if you have to. I’m standing up for Jesus.”

Even kill me? When did anyone ever threaten him with violence? He’s just trying to blow it out of proportion. Protesting would not get him sent to jail or killed. He’s trying to act like a victim, even a martyr.

Its funny how he says that he doesn’t scare easily when he is so scared of the word “Demon”, to the point where he associates the word itself to the Devil, that he must protest against it.

*sigh* What a lovely fellow. I just read on the newspaper’s website that he’s been arrested AGAIN for using a bullhorn to shout across the street at the kids and the principal. It’s mighty hard to reason with people like him, unfortunately.

Well, Idid’nt read the article but I do have an opinion. Chased by a real demon, yes they are alive and well,I am pretty sensitive, now, when I hear about demons. The person that I speak of is a novice black witch and because I have a wee bit of the site, have also learned that the black witch is just a cover for hertrue identity a demon. In fact, I have uncovered a whole nest of them.

Maybe he’d do better trying another tactic…Claim himself as a demon and protest the negative image – LOL
Oh, and get a permit. Take the protest to the homecomming game!

That’s like saying an image of a priest will encourage people to be good. Ask the altar boys how that turned out.

This person has some serious mental issues. This behavior is definitely not normal, can’t the authorities not see this? He needs some professional help. I only hope he does not completley lose it and hurt someone or himself.

Well, he’s got a point – (pointed head maybe) – if he feels compelled to protest, then may he get a permit to do so. Otherwise, he has his fundamental religious right, just as we do, to say what he thinks. But he should get a permit.

The Problem many have have with this, is that this man is a Christian, and we are pagans. We shouldn’t bash his beliefs, they are rightfully his, as our beliefs are our right.

He sees demons, and wants the school mascot changed so that he and all Christians in the area can bully a school system. Me thinks he doth protest too much, and if he can’t see his children going to that school because of the demon mascot business, then so be it. He should take his children out of that school and find a private Christian school for them. I doubt seriously that the school system is going to go through that financial trial as most school systems are BROKE!

Beliefs aside, public schools are state property, I guess he never heard of that pesky seperation of church and state clause in the constitution, heck, I doubt he hs ever even heard of the constitution…

I grew up in Warner Robins and went to WRHS. The school mascot has nothing to do with religion! We chose the Demon to honor an heroic group of fighter pilots from WW2! Warner Robins as a town only exists because of the establishment of the Air Force Base during WW2! According to the local news, preacher just recently moved to WR and doesn’t like the fact that his son has to attend school there. This leads me to believe that preacher didn’t do his research before relocating. If he doesn’t want his son going to school at my Alma Mater, then all he has to do is either move across town so the kid can attend Northside or he can opt for private school. This idiot preacher is not the first to have protested our mascot and will not be the last. So far all they have managed to do is highly PO the majority of a military town by making false accusations concerning our choice to honor our military heroes with each protest they stage. GO DEMONS!!!!!!!

Thank you silvergryphon for that wonderful explanation of where the mascot came from. I wonder if the moron that’s protesting it knows that bit of history. Figure the odds. Being near a character of a demon will not make one bad. I went into my garage today and I didn’t become a car. And just because “Christians” go into church buildings, it doesn’t automatically make them good. I became Pagan because I got frustrated with the contradictions in “organized religions”.

That one quote in the article—”Demons aren’t lazy Christians are”…oh wow. I’ve stopped laughing manically, and I’m sure to stop smiling sometime soon.

I’m from Warner Robins, though I attended Northside, I know how important mascots are in that football town. Yes he has a right to protest, but one whining pastor can’t change something that has been so deeply rooted in that town for about 50 years now, if not longer. Plus it has almost been changed before, to the Rockin’ R’s if I remember correctly, but it didn’t happen.
Yes, a demon is a symbol, but it is a personal choice to see it as evil. It is not like the different mascots of the Indian tribes which were offensive and have been mostly all removed to my knowledge.
And other fun facts about this pastor: he is not from Warner Robins, he and his son are from the Atlanta area and he has been recently divorced from his wife. My whole family is Christian and I see how many in this region look down on that last fact alone. It seems to me that he is picking a fight with something else to hide his own faults. But he really does not know what he is truly dealing with.
And for the last part in that article, “the 9th grader has received threats since he began protesting the demon mascot.” Well of course he would be. Warner Robins completely shuts down for many football games. I fear for that poor child, for what is father is doing. The 9th grader is now practically wearing a constant shirt that says ‘please kill me’ from his father’s actions.
And as a side note, this town is in the bible belt, and while players are able to not participate, as long as they are respectful, prayers are led by the coaches before each game to ensure each player on both teams are protected. Doesn’t seem to be filled with satan to me.
Things like this seem to happen every so many years to Warner Robins High School and nothing ever happens. I feel sorry for them, and I wish people would stop worrying about something as simple as a school mascot and focus on something more productive in their lives.

(15) Conner says:

The Demons tooks their mascot name from a heroic Air Force squadron that flew out of Robins AFB.

This guy’s campaign may be ridiculous, but I support his 1st Amendment right to protest, in spite of the city’s strict limits on free speech and assembly.

However, it’s the SCHOOL BOARD who makes such decisions, not the faculty & students at the school itself

Down here in Phoenix, our local baseball team is called the “Sun Devils”. Gee, should we worry about howling preachers too? Nobody’s tried it yet, but there’s always a chance.
