Ancient Porn Brings Renovation to Halt

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed typing that headline, really. Anyway, from our Nifty Archaeological Stuff file comes a story out of Canterbury, where some major renovations have come to a screeching halt. It seems that a building being rehabbed was sitting upon a cache of some fairly important historical artifacts - including pots decorated with images of couples having a bit of sexytime.

A spokesman told reporters, "We have found many personal effects and high-class pottery - known as samianware - depicting hunting and erotic scenes."

In addition to naughty pottery, archaeologists have also unearthed a well-preserved portion of a Roman road, a large timber-framed building, and a clay-floored shop with bread ovens still in place. Researchers believe the site may have been a "network of small shops, homes and lanes representing inner-city life nearly 2,000 years ago."

The building presently at the site houses the Beaney Institute, and was built in 1990. It is being doubled to update the city's museum and library.

Canterbury was settled by Romans around 55 b.c.e., right around the time of Julius Caesar's invasion. A number of Roman buildings and artifacts have been discovered there, including a city gate, a theater, public baths, and temples.

Funny, I was in a production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” in high school and in one scene, my character was blackmailed into participating in a less-than-ethical scheme with a threat to have his hidden stash of erotic pottery revealed . . . LOL :-P

I wonder what they’d say about a Priapus statuette? (The John Holmes of mythology. Now how did I know that?)

This kind of art motiff was very common and not only placed on their pottery but used on outdoor walls of buildings as advertising for houses of “pleasure.” This art was often placed on interrior walls of Roman villas, especially in the areas that were utilized for orgies.

I have been to Pompeii 4 times in my life and each time, except for the 1st when I was a kid, I was amazed a the shear volume of erotica on display in brothels, baths, private homes and even in public. Of course its my understanding that the area was like Las Vegas for the Empire.
