Actor Johnny Depp is joining the ever-growing list of celebrities who are supporting the West Memphis Three, and will be appearing on 48 Hours Mystery this weekend to ask authorities to re-examine the convictions of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley. The three men were convicted as teens of the murders of three young boys in 1993. Echols is on death row, and the other two are serving life sentences.

The case has come under continuous media scrutiny because of questions regarding circumstantial evidence and a rush to reassure the community by convicting someone quickly. In past years, new forensic evidence has surfaced that could potentially get the men a new trial, or even have them released. Even the families of two of the three victims now feel that the case was badly handled.

Other celebrities who have publicly called for the case to be re-examined include former Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, actress Winona Ryder, singer Natalie Maines, actor/musician Henry Rollins, and the guys from Metallica. While I don't think that celebrity support necessarily lends any cause legitimacy, what it can do is bring public awareness to the issue. The more people who pay attention to this case, the more public pressure can be put on the people in position to make things change. And if Johnny Depp's pretty face gets one more voter to write a letter about this to their congressman or senator, then that's fine with me.

Just when I thought he couldn’t possibly get any cooler.

Thanks for posting this and hopefully raising even more public awareness of this obscene travesty of justice!

I have followed the WM3 ever since I started reading this blog. It has inpired me to read The Devils Knot as well as watch the clips on Utube and although I am happy that Johnny Depp is on board, I thought the program could have been a little better. For instance…
They spent way to much time on Damien and his wife’s relationship. Yes she is an important part and I don’t discount it, but they didn’t need to spend that amount of time on it. This was definitely the “nutshell” version. They could have focused more on the roadblocks that got put up by the state such as facts that none of them had a lawyer and a parent and they were all under age,so much is missing from the original taping of the “confession” and really driving the point home that the “so called” expert had a mail order PHd. They interviewed Damien, who is on death row. Yes he is the most crucial to get off. If he is released, the 2 others will follow. They interviewd Jessie Misskelley’s lawyer, but there was no voice for Jason Baldwin. I may have missed it, but there was no mention as to where the state “people” are today. As Damien said on Larry King Live: Alot of people made their careers off of his case. What would it do to their credibility? Ok.. time to get off the soapbox. I hope soon that these boys are released. No Justice. No Peace.

While this case is a little beyond my time originally, I’ve known about the possibility of a retrial or release for a while now. After reading up on it and seeing the opinions from this blog, I believe the WM3 were falsly convicted. I really hope this helps raise awareness and these men, and the vicitms, eventually get the justice they deserve.
