Make $$ as a Witch
Wednesday July 8, 2009
I once joked to a friend that it would be nice if people just paid me to be a witch, and now it appears that a British historical site is offering some (lucky?) soul just that opportunity. The Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset are apparently seeking out a witch to live in the caves, cackle a bit, and cause blight and crop failures. Yanno, 'cause that's what we do.
A spokesman says Wookey Hole is currently witchless, because the previous one retired. The £50,000-a-year salary is based on work done as needed, mostly during peak tourist times like summer and Christmas, but also at Halloween - go figure. The ad says that "ambitious witches looking for a "key career move" should arrive dressed for work armed with any "essential witch accoutrements". In other words, show up looking as stereotypical as you possibly can. Feel free to attach a wart to your nose and color your skin green, because it sure sounds like that's what they have in mind.
Interviews for the job, which is open to both male and female applicants, take place on July 28 at Wookey Hole.

Wow….what is it they do when they get this job?
That’s just laughs. I wonder how many applicants will be competing. Watch out might get what you ask for
That sounds like such a hoot! I wish I lived where I could apply!
Wow, I’d love to try for that, too. It’d be a hoot and a half, lol.
Will you still be doing your column from the cave?
LOL — I wonder if the cave has Wi-Fi service.
LOL….Patti…I bet they do!!!
oh i love it!! paying someone to go and live in a cave!! iam a witch and i live in a cave!!in spain!!
http://www.wookey.co.uk/news.htm
looks like a live in position
That’d be perfect for some of my ex girlfriends.
Wait, you said Witch. With a “w”. Nevermind.
lol, this actually sounds like fun… i’m sure it isn’t meant as an offense to pagans.
<3
Ya think that the townspeople dress like christians and act like a bunch of AAses? I don’t like making fun of anyones choice of beliefs.
1. Lots of time to read my books
2. Spend a little time spoiling some milk
3. Scare some idiots
Sounds perfect to me.
Sue, I imagine there are plenty of AAses in the local population, Christian or not.
My Mum sent me an application form this morning as we live nearby, sounds too good to be true!
“I once joked to a friend that it would be nice if people just paid me to be a witch…”
Patti, if you get hooked up with *that* job, make sure they have two positions open. I’ll be right behind you.
But hey — our jobs aren’t so bad, either.
Raine – you got that right! And honestly, I wouldn’t mind that whole cave gig. Lune’s post was right on target: read some books, hang out and hex the occasional cow, and mostly people leave you alone. If only it were a little closer
That sounds awesome! I would certainly apply just for the laughs at the stereotype!
Aww man… I wish there was a job like that going here in Aus. I’d love to do it, and I really need a change of career right now!
I’d love to conduct the interviews! Imagine the questions to throw at the applicants to tell the witches from the wannabes!! Then having them audition with their best “cackle”–what a HOOT!!
LOL LOL LOL LOL What a hoot! I havent had such a great laugh in years! The mind boggles at the images this article creates! LOL
I’m so glad I read this; it has put all the last week’s frustrations into perspective
LOL
If my mum could hear me now I’d be getting the old “Stop laughing like a witch!” said to me LOL
Well, I’d make alot more money doing that than I do now making Herbal Sachets. LOL! And I can look very stereotypical
Aaaaaaa! Sounds like such a lovely career move indeed!
Wonder if the cave comes equiped or if one must provide there own ‘tools of the trade’? And of course internet service, cable and phone are a must!:D
Well I’ve got the cackle down pat for sure. But the rest well don’t like being fit into a mold as a witch. Also don’t want to move to England. I love Vancouver BC too much, it’s where I was born and raised and hard to convince me to leave even for that kind of $$$
dang. sounds awsome except the cave part.
