Neolithic Tombs Found In Britain

Wednesday June 10, 2009
Kingston University reports that a pair of previously undiscovered burial sites have been located by archaeologists. Dr. Helen Wickstead and her team discovered the 6,000-year-old complex near Damerham, Hampshire. Fragments of pottery, stone tools, and bits of flint have already been excavated, and work continues. It's not known yet whether or not there are human bones in the tombs, but Wickstead seems to think it's possible.

What's really fascinating about this discovery is that it's in an area that is actually pretty heavily traveled - there's a car park not too far from where one of the tombs was discovered. Researchers noticed the area back in 2003 when English Heritage looked at aerial maps and discovered irregularities that typically indicate buried archaeological sites.

Damerham is located some fifteen miles from Stonehenge, and it's possible that some of the large circular enclosures around these tombs were built at the same time. The area seems to be a literal treasure trove of Neolithic items, but because of development in the area, archaeologists tend to be surprised when anything new turns up.
