Hurry, Let's Blame Pagans Again!

By , About.com Guide   June 3, 2009

Follow me on:

A note to law enforcement around the world: Just because you find a dead or mutilated animal doesn't mean the local Pagans/Satanists/Santerians are up to some nefarious celebration of the dark forces. Really.

A further note would be a suggestion that if you're in law enforcement, and you're not a Pagan, Wiccan, or member of other mainstream faith, it would be worth it for you to plunk down a few bucks and buy Kerr Cuhulain's Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca. Or, barring that, any time you think an incident might be the work of someone "dabbling in the occult," try asking an actual Wiccan, Pagan, Satanist, or Other for their opinion. Seriously, you'll save yourself a lot of time instead of chasing false leads.

(1) R.Blood says:

It’s amazing how quickly they come to the decision that it’s the work of satanists or pagans. It would be nice if they would actually consult a pagan or a book before jumping to that conclusion, but I don’t see that happening any time soon.

(2) Nefol Fey says:

It would be wonderful if law enforcement would actually heed such a suggestion. Sadly, where I stay, the hopes of that are very far from being realized.

(3) Morgana says:

Maybe they need to be looking for the next Jeffery Dahmer?

(4) Freeman says:

Actually, I know a Witch who used to consult for the police in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He probably did save them a lot of time.

(5) Makarios says:

And what’s this bit that one generally sees about “dabbling in the occult?” Would a reporter write about someone “dabbling in Christianity,” for instance?

(6) Jade says:

How many times have they found a dead animal, blamed pagans, and then have it actually turn out to be Pagans? I’m pretty sure never.

(7) Zion Mystic says:

yeah, it’s dumb…plus they’re trying to connect it to the summer solstice, but it happened on May 25! what the heck?!

(8) Ang says:

I read this on the news the other day…. It made me so mad!! It’s a ridiculous thing. Plus, as a person who’s grown up and raised horses, the cut on the foal looks like an accident – they had also said they had a previous horse with similar injuries. Instead of blaming a certain religion, I’d be scouring my fields and fence lines – There’s better evidence and a stronger bet that there’s a piece of metal, glass, or other sharp object causing their “ritual mutilation”.

(9) Ross says:

As a “satanist” myself, I have to say what happened to those animals quite frankly is ghastly and appalling, an absolute disgrace.

And what was the point? To date I have not had contact with any Satanist of any variation (Gnostic Luciferian, Joy of Satan movement, LaVeyan, Theistic LaVeyan, Polytheistic Satanist, Temple of Set Paradigm Satanist, Aquarian, etc) that would have considered doing such a thing for any reason – it’s far too “main stream, crude and frankly disgusting”. And even if they did, leaving it in suffering and pain is also unacceptable. Clearly the attack was deliberate, but probably not from any Satanist/Pagan/Wiccan/similar “unusual” theology.

Perhaps one day people will open their eyes and stop making uninformed assumptions.

Blessings of whatever deities you do/not have and toodles

(10) Ross says:

Ang – I sincerely hope you are right about this, but what would have caused such a deep cut?

(11) Sam says:

What do people expect, they are programmed to believe stupidity. THEY CAN’T THINK, because they wanna believe crap like that. And have had it shoved down their throats, with all the liars, that are christians , that supposedly were once witches. I was in OHIO when a supposed expert in the occult claimed a garbage heap was a site of satanic activity.
It was News to the Satanists. If any body from police, or any government agency is reading this, WAKE up , please.

(12) William says:

They might want to check out Tony Kail’s “A Cop’s Guide to Occult Investigations” from Paladin Press also. This book was written by a cop for cops. It is well researched and factual. I have had the privilage of speaking with Tony and am actually pictured in the book.

(13) Hillary says:

Having treated similar wounds on my own horses, this looks to me more like another animal bit the foal; there is no indication of whether the owner is ill-advised enough to leave the stallion turned out with the main herd, and some stalliosn WILL attack the youngsters. At any rate, I would be more inclined to look for another animal as the culprit, based on the photograph, although it could look very different in person.

But the comment about Satanists or Pagans IS disturbing; we really have a long way to go still, don’t we?

(14) Silver Thunderbird says:

I’m surprised this same news site and local government hasn’t blamed this situation (http://news.stv.tv/scotland/97420-police-say-fife-care-home-fire-was-deliberate/) on pagans as well… after all, since we’re so into mutilating animals, we might as well try to burn to death a dozen or so elderly folks too, right?? (Please read the most sarcasm I can put into that here… this is absolutely ludicrous.)

June 9, 2009 at 12:02 pm
(15) hannah says:

you know I dont jump to the conclusion there are christians around when I see tons of mini vans. I dont run and hide when I see that fishy plaque. People kill animals. there are mean people out there, why do cops have to be so hateful?

(16) Arlene deWinter says:

Have we gotten to the point where mainstream society cannot admit it has members who are simply evil, sadistic, and depraved, but it must be the work of ‘outsiders’ like us?
Chances are its some yobbo’s kid who is reacting against their dysfunctional family, or just an ignorant angry young man.
It is sad how defenceless animals must suffer form the disorder minds of humans.
As we all know, Pagans love the animals and even in religions where animal sacrifice plays a part,it is handled in a SACRED manner usually by rural people who kill these animals for dinner anyway.
The whole thing just burns me up.
Sincerely,
Arlene deWinter

(17) Silver says:

So.. its funny that i hear about this today bc yesterday ( im part of a few activist sites … ) i got a package in the mail from Peta . It was a pamphlet about how domestic animals ( and others ) are being killed for their fur !!!!!!! NOT from pagans , or wiccans or anything like that but … what sadly the world runs on , the fashion industry !!!! Truly … we shouldnt be the target in this :( Might i add , that i hope that we can all send blessings to those poor animals , theyre being skinned pretty much alive bc the ppl dont want the fur to be messed up . they can live for 5 minutes after being skinned alive :(

(18) Jen says:

It drives me CRAZY when our local news does stories about animals being found dead, it “looks to them like a satanic ritual” Well congrats, I am sure you put a lot of thought into that. It’s so sad that they fuel this stereotype that takes years to undo!

(19) spellcaster24354 says:

It seems to never stop does it?
I think it’s more sensationalism than anything else! Anything to get their name or organization in the mainstream media news! How would the police feel if every time some one got shot we blamed them? It’s just easier to pass the buck on the first thing ,person or group that pops into mind!Pagans love and honor nature and all of the creations that come with it I am an animal lover and yes I am a pagan but NEVER Never would I ever hurt an animal on purpose! The trouble is that we as pagans, wiccans and magickal folk have been stereo typed as evil and depraved just because we don’t believe as other mainstream religons believe( Christianity) It’s sad and yet it angers me to know that this type of crud is still going on.
Blessings All!

(20) Rafe says:

Is there a place where we can go, and as an organization, demand a retraction?

It seems like divide-and-conquer to me. Because we are not united, it is like they can slander us all they want. There has to be ways to demand equality. There has to be re-education, to eliminate the lies against us. As a people, not Mr/s. Polytheisim.

We need a way to diplotmatically (sp?) show we -are- in fact a people worthy of respect.

Divide and conquer is a method used against us for centuries.

There has to be a better way. For us and “them” equally.

(21) Skydancer says:

I am amazed, as well, that the press was willing to print the story as such, without doing a little homework first. My oldest son is studying religious philosophy and is learning the fine art of religious debate. (wry smile from me here…) He tells me he has learned that before you make a statement, make sure you are informed, lest you say something that turns out to be untrue and it comes back to bite you in the proverbial ass.
As far as the picture of the filly, I’ve looked as closely as I can and it looks more like two obvious puncture holes, one at top in the white hair and one, (this hole torn wider), at bottom in the black hair. It appears that there is a piece of straw in the hair between both holes. As a former horse owner, I can say that metal fence posts, sticks and various other objects can make such injuries. Even at birth, if the mare birthed in a standing position! Food for thought…

(22) Pterosapiens says:

I find it ridiculous that you seem to equate satanism with paganism. Satan is a Christian invention, modeled on old pagan horned god figures to discredit those beliefs and rally newly indoctrinated and thus zealous people to mindlessly defend the “new” god of the church by destroying, torturing, killing or burning anything or anyone who held to those old ways. I feel you ought to make this distinction and not just go along with this crap. You have to be part of that christian/”devil” spiritual dichotomy for the idea of satan to have any relevance. We should work to free our selves of such nonsense, not perpetuate it by passing it on like it was valid.

June 9, 2009 at 8:26 pm
(23) Skydancer says:

Hmmmm, Pterosapiens, you make an excellent point and now I find myself wondering why, indeed, paganism has been brought into it? Perhaps because of mention of the upcoming solstice in the article? Or do Satanists also celebrate the solstice on the same date?

(24) Lady Sage says:

This is a sad state of affairs when they grasp at straws & want to automatically blame what they fear & don’t understand, instead of looking at the crime objectively & actually do their jobs & I love the suggestion, read the law enforcements guide to wicca…

June 10, 2009 at 9:43 am
(25) Rich says:

Who was the law enforcement authority? What state and jurisdiction was it in? These too are things that need to be taken into consideration before we just go bitching about them bitching about us. Not only that, but, do we know the complete and full circumstances? Were there any legitimate ritualistic symbols scrapings or anything stating for sure that there could have been a ritual held at the site? Or is it just stupid a$$ poachers/sociopaths/psychos just looking for a place to lay blame? Without all of the facts, I find it hard to believe either the authorities or even our own sometimes. Especially when it’s just someone out to start trouble. It’s happened before and it wouldn’t surprise me if it happens again. Blessings to all.

June 10, 2009 at 12:34 pm
(26) Arianne Weaver says:

I would like to know how they recognise “ritualistic” damge , done by whatever group, in the first place. If they knew enough to know what to look for, they’d know enough to know it wasn’t done by the group/s they’re trying to blame anyway!

(27) Amy says:

Sadly Kerr Cuhulain’s Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca is out of print so he can add more info and re-release it.

There are some other similar books on the market if you just look.

I mail a copy to my local law enforcement when I move to a new area. And if you’re worried about coming out of the broom closet, just send it without your name and address.

Blessings

(28) Athena Ravenmoon says:

I am Pagan and I am in Law Enforcement. It is extermemly aggrivating to see things like this. Since I can see from both sides of this particular fence, all I can say is…not ALL of us (law enforcement) are like that. I have done our community (Pagan) some good by explaining to those who ask what is real and what is fiction in the Pagan community. I am happy to say that for the most part people are very accepting of what I have taught them. There are a few that still don’t want anythig to do with me or my beliefs but thats okay for now. I just hope they know that they are stuck with me for years and they better get used to it…LOL

I have never read the book you have suggested but I think I might pick it up next time I go book hunting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Blessings,
Athena Ravenmoon

(29) Mistress Morigianna says:

At the shop I work at we work with the police and lawers to help fight this. They often com in with a picture of drawings or stuff and say- “hey does this mean anything?”

They also have defendants that say “I did this _____(awful thing) because its my religion- I am ____ (some sort of pagan or non mainstream religion..)” Then we get a book and PROVE if they really were that religion they would not be hurting things or people.

I also have been interviewed by the paper and news here in SO Cal. Every Positive bit helps!

I am proud to be a Pagan. I love life. I do not kill animals or eat babies. Nor do any of my friends. Those ideas are just ignorant and I wish I could set the record straight, but sadly, there are way too many narrow minded people out there who think we do participate in these ghastly events.

(32) THISTLE DOWNE says:

Ahhhh…the world is so full of ignorance indeed. It’s amazing how these things always are assumed to be the dark work of some occult!
Did they ever stop to think it could have been something as simple as the playful little creature running smack into wire fencing or such?

Or….

Perhaps it was the aliens from Alpha Centory…I hear they have a thing for mutilating livestock…Farmers in the midwest make those claims all te time! XP

“I mail a copy to my local law enforcement when I move to a new area. And if you’re worried about coming out of the broom closet, just send it without your name and address.”

Excellent idea. However, there are still many small towns (and maybe even larger ones) that are still ruled by the Good ‘ol Boy system and they may not pay the book any attention at all. Their minds are made up, don’t confuse them with the truth. ;)

I believe it is still a good idea and certainly worth a try. If only one officer gets any education at all from the book, that officer could make a huge difference in a small town.

The Satanic religion makes it very clear:
Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
This is part of The 11 Satanic Rules of the Earth/The Satanic version of the Ten Commandments.
The Holy Bible endorses sacrifice (Leviticus is a bloody bar-b-que.) We do not.

Hey, I am NOT trying to start a war,(lol) or judge your beliefs. I believe in one true God, but I am not here to debate. I just wanted to post this vile information I found. This is from the racist “pagan” band Barzum.

http://www.burzum.org/eng/news.shtml/

That brings us to my next point. The “Wiccans” and other “Pagans” don’t seem to understand that the worship of Mother Earth, the goddess, was first and foremost a fertility cult where making and raising (quality) children was seen as the most important task. Because of that the circles of Freya priestesses picked out the best man in the tribe to be their Freyr priest, because quality was what mattered the most, and naturally the best man could give them the best children. Because of that these chosen Freyr priests had several wives. The unhealthy children, the sick children, the weak or otherwise not ideal children were set out in the forest to be eaten by wolves. They didn’t do this because they were poor, but because their natural religion dictated this.

And this is where the modern “Pagans” realizes that they perhaps are not “Pagans” after all, because they think this is a cruel custom. However, that is the Pagan philosophy of life: only let the healthy, the strong and even only the moral, the good and beautiful survive. Only Christians appreciates degenerated children, genetically defective creatures that should not be allowed to survive, grow up and reproduce in the first place, and by doing that destroy our genetic properties in the long run. Only Christians think quantity rather than quality. Only Christians think it is terrible to kill one individual rather than let this one individual infest a whole community with his or her (genetic) poison.

This REALLY made me mad, sad, sick and a WHOLE host of other emotions that I can’t even identify! I know that what you believe does not support this type of behavior. Harming a child ESPECIALLY an INFANT, is unforgiveable. No matter what one believes in infanticide is NOT an acceptable ritual. We all must stand up to this evil. Christian, muslim, jew or other. Peace!

August 31, 2009 at 4:02 pm
(38) paganwiccan says:

Chris, your argument falls under the heading of a logical fallacy, because you’re using a point against Paganism that you yourself said isn’t supported by Pagans as a whole. It would be like me saying, “Oh, well, Fred Phelps says it’s okay to kill abortion doctors, so Christians are killers! But it’s okay, because I know *you* don’t support this.”

Really, the only point to posting such a link is to get people stirred up, since it clearly doesn’t have much to do with the article in question.
