This is a great idea Patty!! I’m having a handfasting in October (Wiccanwise, not the best time of year, but it’s our fav.) We’ll be mixing both elements of traditional and Handfasting, as he is not, but I am. Anyways, Love you love the site..love it! Blessed be.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I’ve always loved the ‘traditional’ way of handfasting. I’ve always thought it was a beautiful way to display your love while tying the knot. Literally! I hope to stay steady enough with my current love that we might have a ceremony of our own one day. Anyway, love the site and the topics!

Hi there!
I was wondering if handfasting is considered a LEGAL marriage, as far as being recognized by the courts for benefits and those types of things? Or does one also have to have a civil ceremony to be legally wed?

Gina – the rules vary from state to state. Typically, whoever married you must file a marriage license with the state or county registrar. If nothing is on file with the court, the marriage would likely not be valid, whether it was done as a handfasting or not.

As an example, in the state of Ohio, anyone can have a handfasting, but for it to be a legal marriage it must be performed by either a Justice of the Peace or a minister who is licensed by the state to solemnize marriages. I would recommend you check with your county clerk to find out what the rules are in your location :)

I attended a handfasting that you did last August (08-08-08)
It was beautiful & I know the couple would love to see their pics on-line!

Here in Pennsylvania, you can have a Quaker wedding where no clergy need be present. Only witnesses and you self-declare your marriage and it is a legal marriage. I went to one about 8 years ago where the grooms’ family are English, druid, and very funny. I split my dress from laughing all night long.

I know several Pagan Priests & Priestess’ that have gone online and received a non-denominational ordination & license that allows them to legally marry people just like a justice of the peace or a religious minister does. (Of course all the paperwork has to be done according to state law too) This is something your P/PS and yourselves may want to look into.

Good luck, congrats and many Blessings on your upcoming handfasting!
