April 22: Earth Day

I recently got an email from a reader who asked why I had bothered to include Earth Day on the 2009 Pagan/Wiccan Calendar. After all, as she pointed out, it's not part of the official Wheel of the Year, and it's also a fairly new holiday. So why waste peoples' time talking about it?

Well, here's why. As part of my commitment to my spiritual path, I choose to take on many obligations. One of those is to be a responsible steward of the earth. While I recognize that not all Pagans and Wiccans make this same commitment, it's also important to recognize those who do. If indeed we are to honor the earth and its contents as a creation of the Divine, or to believe that the Divine can be found in nature, I feel that it's important for us to take charge of our planet's future. We can make changes now, and educate the coming generations, that will have an impact for centuries to come.

Sure, I realize that some people see Earth Day as some hippie granola-munching liberal freak show, and they're certainly welcome to that opinion. However, there are many of us who feel that preservation of our world is not a political cause, but a humanitarian one. As such, it is part of our spiritual journey. So, yes, I could certainly leave Earth Day off the calendar. But I choose to include it because I know that many of our readers recognize this as a day on which they make a little extra effort to educate others and be thankful for the bounty that our planet has given us.

For some ideas on how you can celebrate: Earth Day, April 22.

Earth Day . . . hmm . . . well, first, “hippie granola-munching liberal freak show”? Who are you talking to? Neo-cons or wiccans and pagans? Sure, lotsa wiccans and pagans are simply emotionally disturbed loonies who hear voices and run around naked in the woods . . . don’t like that, do you? Well, I don’t like being called a “hippie granola-munching liberal freak” simply because I, like you, think Earth Day is a natural fit for all Nature-based life philosophies and religions (notice I didn’t say, all “pagans”).

Whoever there is that follows any nature-based philosophy and doesn’t think Earth Day is worthy for them to be involved in . . . had better get back into their meditations and ask Gaia what She thinks.

It don’t matter what -I- say, but I’m telling ya, She ain’t gonna like it if you people continue dissing Her like this.

Edward, I think you may have missed the part where I said “some people see Earth Day” as such a thing. One of the points of the post was a rebuttal of that obviously erroneous perception.

AMEN Sister !
Being Stregata ourselves, every day is Mother earth day !
If we can just get together regardless of spirituality or religious beliefs and work for the same results, then we are blessed to be one but for a day.
It is all about giving back to Mother earth in thanks and appreciation.
Cleaning up Mother Earth even one piece of trash at.
HAPPY EARTH DAY & don’t forget tomorrow being the special day that the pentacle became a recognized symbol of faith on the tombsones of our VETERANS !
PEACE, love & hope !
