Botanicas Thriving in Bad Economy

We've seen a lot of stories lately about the business for psychics increasing as the economy takes a downward spin. Certainly, I know that about 90% of my Tarot readings these days are for people who have questions about their jobs, finances, homes, etc.. In addition to psychics, the folks who run botanicas -- shops that specialize in Santeria supplies -- are seeing their business pick up. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel takes a look at this phenomenon, and reminds readers that there are some things that even the Orishas can't fix.

It's a valid point, and one I try to make to my Tarot querents often. While Tarot readings are great as a guidance tool, there are some things that can't be fixed on a magical level unless you're willing to put in some mundane work too. You can chant little couplets and light candles all day long in hope of getting a job, but unless you get your butt out there pounding the pavement and filling out applications, magic is not going to help you. Likewise, be careful of people who promise to fix all your woes with a spell -- I frequently get emails from readers who were caught off guard by unscrupulous pay-for-spells websites.

What's interesting about the practitioners of Santeria in the article is that while they do sell magical tools, they also offer hope and guidance. Neither of these things comes with a guarantee, but both are crucial to improving one's life both magically and mundanely.
