Live Near Amarillo? Check Your Maps!

By January 16, 2009

Follow me on:

This is so weird that at first, I honestly thought it was a joke from the folks at The Onion or someplace, but no, it's real. There's a fundamentalist group in Texas called Repent Amarillo that has put together a map, complete with little pushpins, so people can see where Really Bad Occulty Stuff is in their area. There's a coffee bar that's on the list because a Pagan meetup group hangs out there, plus the place is popular with the local gay community. A nature center made the list because it's a place where "peacenicks" go to worship in an "earth circle," along with a Reiki center, a couple of gay bars, some strip clubs, and a Hindu temple.

Repent Amarillo seems like a fun group. Here are some of the really evil stuffs they like to protest, according to their Mission Page: Gay pride events (surprise), "Earth worship events such as “Earth Day," breast cancer events like Race for the Cure (because they want to "to illuminate the link between abortion and breast cancer"), and spring break (which we all know is a tool of Satan anyway). They organize "outreaches" as part of their Spiritual Warfare, and go hang out in front of adult-themed businesses, in hopes of saving the sinners. They apparently sneak their members into such places, and if you play around on their website you can see photos of when they Infiltrated Teh Swingerz Club. Oh no! Naughty red walls! Freshly laundered sheets! Oh, the horror of it all... won't someone please protect the children from the Pagan coffee houses?

I think it's clear that humble Amarillo, Texas, is a hotbed of Pagan activity. Next thing you know, it'll spread to... oh, wait. We're everywhere already. Never mind.

Looked at their map. Now i wish they would come to my town. It would save me an awful lot of time and gas to find all the cool places to hang out at.

(2) paganwiccan says:

See, that’s what I thought too. If you had one of these Sinner Maps, you could figure out where you wanted to go before you left the house. Because really, just Googling “gay coffee house” gets me a lot of really weird hits.

(4) Vandreyer says:

OMG that is EXACTLY what I was going to say! Just this morning I tried to look up some sort of wicca-ey store in my town. I looked up occult, wicca, witch, and metaphysics in the phone book and found only 1 place!!! Let’s lobby for Repent Fort Collins! But seriously, wtf?!?!? Masonic lodges are on the list. George Washington, et al were masons! So are we going with Masons are Templars are Gnostics are Illuminatti are Pagans are Cathars are etc??? I need a program! HELP!!!!

(5) paganwiccan says:

I’m dying to see a Repent Ohio on there. I betcha they’d include stuff like the Great Serpent Mound (Pagan idolatry Oh Noez!) and the local Stonewall chapter. And totally the Ohio State University, because they offer partner benefits for same sex couples. Oh, and the giant Longaberger basket out on I-70, because it’s like Mecca for midwestern basket-collecting housewives.

Jeez, if I had more time, I’d start this up myself just for fun :)

Seriously, tell me about it. I laughed really hard when I saw this– Plus, I was thinking exactly the same thing! A “Repent Los Angeles County” would be pretty fabulous. The whole U.S. could repent! Then I’d always know where to go. I suppose it’s journey over destination, though. Hehe.

(7) Sladie says:

HAHAHA! I lived in Pampa for 6 years, moved back home to Canada in 2001. Dang, it almost makes me want to go back for a visit and see all this cool stuff!

January 16, 2009 at 6:34 pm
(8) Sladie says:

P.S just in case no one knew, Pampa is an hour north of Amarillo. *Shrugs* clear up any confusion that I might have caused.

(9) simple a girl with a dream says:

At first I thought this was dangerous, which it is. If some one who feel the need to violently react to those place shown on the map, it would be bad. At the same time…I kind of need them up here in New York, there are a lot of cool place, but I don’t know where they are. I would love to New York City repent. I think we might need.So hard not to laugh when re-reading the post above.

(10) Lori says:

Oh could they please invade Each state? I imagine some of the maps would be as thick as a phone book! But How Fun it would be to have just such a map.

(11) Elisha says:

You know, I only live a few hour’s drive from Amarillo… My husband and his aunt always joke “Amarillo by mornin’” and apparently, they’ve been there quite a few times. I think this calls for a roadtrip to visit some of these unholy places!

(12) Adhara says:

Oh Patty anyone can find a “gay” coffee house but finding a “gay wiccan coffee house” now thats special.

(13) paganwiccan says:

I tried “gay Wiccan coffee house with abortion pamphlets and Earth Day recycling projects” just to narrow the Sin Field a bit, but that didnt’ get me much of anything that made sense :)

(14) Ryan says:

As much as I’d like to see a map like that of my town(complete with a rainbow push-pin on my yard), I still think these people are a bunch of twits.
Why? Because they cannot use an apostrophe correctly, and the whole breast cancer thing is so over the line.
They forget that all women can se effected by this terrible disease, regardless of “WIKKID PRO-CHOICE DEBILRY.”

(15) James R. says:

Well, in the highly unlikely event that I ever find myself in Amarillo, at least I know where I need to go if I need porn. I like, too, that the 806 has clearly defined and advertised hours for witches and pagans. Imagine the embarrassment if you turned up at 4pm on a Friday or something. Still, when a group like this believes in protesting events trying to raise funds to cure breast cancer, I find it a bit difficult to find them completely comedic somehow…

(16) Wolf Chases Stars says:

Interesting notion. There are pros and cons to it, as with everything.

+ Free advertising for adult businesses, Pagan shops, “Compromised Church’s” (Engrish FAIL) and other places of interest.

- Members of the congregation harassing decent people who just want a cup of coffee and a Circle to dedicate their stash of porn to Eros.

-! Protesting breast cancer research. Oh, please. Link to abortion, my backside. I wonder if women who suffer the disease (it’s bound to happen, if it hasn’t already) are kicked out of this particular church. Seriously. My husband’s aunt had a mastectomy and radiation treatments for breast cancer – and she was an 87-year-old virgin, and a devout Catholic!

Final Verdict: FAIL

(17) Meghan says:

This is hilarious and scary at the same time. I am from Canyon, born and raised (15 miles south of Amarillo) and this is ridiculous. I am not “pagan”, wiccan or anything like that but I do believe that we all have a right to believe in whatever we want to. It’s actually kind of scary and just so you all know, Amarillo isn’t too happy about it either!!!! Now, if only more people would come out to oust this guy! Plus, now I know of some really interesting places to hang out that I didn’t know of before and meet some new, cool people. Way to go Repent Amarillo!!!

(18) sagesmoon says:

Well….they might better add all the Lowes to the list as well, as they allow “partner benefits” too…..I was impressed to hear it(daughter works there) But I too, would love a map…..reckon they got one for Mississippi??? Or….maybe we should make a map….of “churchy” places to “avoid”???? hee hee hee;)

(19) Charlie says:

Unfortunately, I live in Amarillo. Honestly, this is all a little embarrassing. While I would not call myself a wiccan (or really anything else) I do believe and practice some of the same things. I do feel kind of bad for these people, though, and their families. Think of how terrified they are. And how insecure they are in their beliefs. *sigh* Oh well, what are you gonna do? Hopefully this will kind of die out or at least stop being such a big deal.

(20) ted says:

I notice that on their website they don’t list any contact or location information for Repent Amarillo. Also check their link page some have had to post messages that they are not and have never been affilated with repent amarillo, due to repent amarillo linking to them.

(21) Bliss says:

I am Pagan, and live in Amarillo. Repent Amarillo has caused alot of discussions around here. I think these “warriors” need to leave people and places around here alone. There is not one place that has been marked on that map that causes problems for anyone. I am part of the group Earth Circles (online) and I keep planninng on going to the Pagan Coffee they have every Saturday, but I have a hard time meeting people. So I keep missing the meetings and plan on going the next week, I am so PISSED off about Repent Amarillo, that maybe it has given me the push I need to finally go. So… Thank You Repent Amarillo, for the push.

(22) Dorcha Lobo says:

I live in Amarillo and I am A swinger and a pagan…

This jerk is looking for a name for himself at the price of hurting others in the community. My friends have been posted on websites, others have received nasty emails because he “hacked” into our yahoo group.

It scares me because at some point in the protesting and demostrating some one is going to end up seriously hurt.

How do you get the Human right groups involved?

He is playing dirty- The shut down a theater here due to his complaints- Avenue 10

Where does it end?

(25) paganwiccan says:

Well, gee, Stred, I looked back through all the comments above, and I didn’t see anyone approving of pedophila. That’s an entirely different story, and not what Repent Amarillo is protesting — ANYONE would protest pedophiles.

What RA is doing is trying to is shut down anyone who does things they disapprove of. Don’t try to make this out like Repent Amarillo’s prime motivation is to save these innocent kids — they’re too busy furthering their anti-gay, anti-Pagan, anti-sex agenda.

And I should point out that the group referenced in the news article is not the swingers club for consenting adults that RA had their big “spiritual warrior” march in front of.

Frankly, I think everyone here supports the prosecution of child molesters to the fullest extent of the law. Some of us even support the death penalty for them, so you need to take your misguided sense of outrage somewhere else and put it to use.

I live near Amarillo, and i have heard of this group on the news. I think it is really funny and sad at the same time. From what I see is the most people here think along the same lines as this group. I watched the news and the owner of the coffee shop was begging to be taken off the list, because he was loosing a lot of business. I am of the Wiccan belief and love it. I find them to be the evil ones. Is long as someone is not hurting anyone else then why bother people?

(27) S. Masterson says:

OMG! I want that map in Lubbock, TX. There’s nothing here, nothing I can look up, and I’m having to order all the herbs, oils and other wiccan supplies on line. Hate shipping charges! I’m going to Amarillo week after turkey day just so I can go shop!!!!

Blessings to you Patti for speaking out! But, yeah, very funny post dear!

(28) Carly says:

I actually met this guy face to face. Argued with him about how I know that his god doesn’t need him to do his work. David must think he’s prophet sent from ‘god’ himself! He couldn’t… not once justify why he was doing these things. He pretended to be open minded about other peoples thoughts and beliefs. The he’d go home and get on his forum and rant and rave about how we were all going to HELL!!!

I dunno what they are doing these days… haven’t heard from them in quite a while. He tried to make amarillo repent… well Amarillo did repent. Against repent Amarillo.

My name is Carly, and I am wanting to organize a circle in Amarillo. I live in Tulia, but I am more than willing to travel to Amarillo to meet with people like myself. But anyway, I’m trying to contact as many pagans as I can in the Amarillo area. Once we have enough people, we will vote on a place and a time to meet. For anymore information, or to let me know that you are interested, email me at iamblade04@yahoo.com
Thanks, and please let me know!
Blessings!

Repent Ohio…yeah. Show us where the cool places to hang out are. Sounds like a tourist map. Great idea Patti. I can help (I’m in Lakewood next to Cleveland).

We must remember how some small groups grew to be huge….look at the KKK for starters. They were small….now look how they have spread their message of hate across America. Wait…isn’t that what RA is doing? Spreading hate across one city….then where will they go! Groups like these remind me of black mold. Unless you kill it and keep the area clean it just comes back.

(30) isis says:

I’m wondering if these guys have permits for their impromptu gatherings. It would seem that they would need them, but I suppose no one in Amarillo has considered this…

And as far as people like stred. I’ll bet if they took the time to pick up a book–even the bible–they might find that they could learn to do something constructive like spell, maybe even think for themselves.

(31) Freki says:

well, at least i knw where to go now lol. i live just north of amarillo and since they where just so kind enough to point out the bad “occult stuff” i think i’ll just go right on and keep on “sinning” and go to those stores and stock up on some “sinner” stuff lol.

(32) Naturemama says:

This is all too funny. These people are nuts. I’m also excited to be moving to the area (Dalhart) in the fall. I’m pagan and looking for likeminded people to hang with. Now I know just where to look!! Lol if I was coming out a swingers club, I would pose for a pic for them to post. I don’t think their congregation would like it too much though. I’m just amazed that these people have twisted the words of Jesus into this sickness.

Living in Amarillo with these people is a challenge. By people I mean Repent Amarillo, i’ve ran into some of them once or twice, they are pigheaded, and narrow minded.
They are the few crazy bad apples in the Christian faith. I myself am a pagan, and have friends of the Christian faith. They know of my spiritual choice and have no problem with it.
However, that map was quite handy on occasion.

(39) Gay and Pagan in Amarillo says:

I loved reading this post. I also loved the map! When I first moved here, I used that to try to find all the great places. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been updated for a while so some of the places no longer exist. :(

I wish there were a way to contact the above posters who are in the area and looking for others though.

I made a yahoo group if any more people come and are interested in connecting with others in the area.
