Did You Catch "The Mentalist"?

Wednesday January 14, 2009
I somehow managed to miss it, because I haven't watched television since I got my Wii, but several readers have emailed me about the CBS show The Mentalist. Apparently last night's episode was just chock-full of misinsformation and stereotypes about Wiccans. According to the network's recap, here's what happened:

When the dead body of a promising high school football star, Cody Elkins, is found with a pentacle and burning candles next to him, CBI suspects a self-proclaimed real witch is the killer. The witch, Tamzin Dove, confesses to putting a death spell on Cody after he killed her cat but swears she did not hurt him. While Cody’s parents believe Tamzin is guilty, hospital records stating Cody put his younger brother, Brad, in the hospital for “rough-housing” and a pentacle in Brad’s hideout suggests he killed his brother in retaliation. But when Brad doesn’t fall for a mentalist trap and instead his father does, the true story of family abuse and Cody’s murder is revealed.

Here's a clip of when the two main characters meet the "only witch in town", complete with herbal tea, jangly beaded curtains, cheesy dialogue and big crystal jewelry: Witchy Woman.

So, did anyone see the whole show? Was it as silly and vomit-inducing as it looks?

(1) Beth says:

I was totally disappointed in the show. It made Wicca/Witchcraft look exremely lame. The one cop repeated over and over that witches were just “geeks in capes”. We were put into catagories with Trekkies, etc. Very, very disappointed!

(2) Labrys says:

Saw the show, gave CBS a piece of my mind about the dismissive nature of their views on Wicca. I am not Wiccan; but if they wouldn’t say about a slightly loopy Christian “You’ve been hurt enough” and follow up with saying “Prayer isn’t real.” then they should not do it to Wicca. (BTW, why does the comment host not accept my real email addy as labrys6 at gmail? as valid?? This is new internet nutsiness?)

(3) Patricia says:

Okay, I was disappointed with this show from the moment the pilot aired and haven’t watched but a few episodes. I found the main character kind of sleazy, the lead female character annoying (she’s not strong, just b****y) and the plots too simplistic to hold my attention. The entire premise of this show is to debunk spiritual encounters by simply saying “that doesn’t happen, so there.” Is anyone really surprised that they’d take a pot-shot at the occult community in any form?

(4) sas says:

The writers need a serious re-education. It was beyond insulting and perpetuated misconceptions and probably added a few new ones.

(5) Kendall says:

I watched the first episode or two, but found it lacking on depth and entertainment. Instead I watch Biggest Loser and that new show Homeland Security US is OK as well. I’m not surprised the show shoveled out some misinformation, but how many get it right? That’s not an excuse for the CBS writers, just saying. It would be nice if TV writers and more importantly, reporters, actually did some level of research before they put something out. So many are showing their ignorance and unfortunately not enough people call them out on it, and their bosses don’t seem to care either.

(6) Goddessmom says:

OMG! I watched the entire nauseating episode, mainly because I wanted to see “who did it”. Unfortunately my blood pressure went up within 2 minutes and stayed there until I went to bed. It had a ditsy blond “witch” (apologies to the blondes out there), who had every bad witch prop known and a few that I had never even thought of. The door knocker was a horned god for crying out loud! Of course when the body was found there were candles and pentagrams strewn around and the cops immediately assumed “black magic”. Just to lame. My hope that anyone who saw it that has a grain of sense saw through the garbage and knows the community better. Those that believe along the lines of the show, I wish them well ~

Bright Blessings!

(7) Paula says:

I saw the episode and was very disappointed. I have watched the program since the pilot episode and have found it interesting, maybe not believeable. However, last night was extremely misinformed and cast witches in a bad light, to say the least. I am in serious doubt as to wheter or not I will continue watching this show based on last nights episode

(8) Mon77 says:

This is the message that I left on CBS. Com. I was very bothered by the episode. I have a good since of humor and so watched the show thinking..it would be funny and they would explain how everything was a big misunderstanding. I was wrong it was completely insulting and irresponsible.

What was CBS thinking with this week’s episode of The Mentalist? I really thought that this was a great show and looked forward to watching every week, but this week’s episode has changed that. This weeks episode was ill informed, no I take that back it was just ignorant. It was degrading and insulting to anyone who is pagan. “Wicca is just a silly lifestyle” I believe that’s what one of the shows characters said. Could you be any more insulting? Pagans and those with alternative beliefs fight against reticule everyday and then CBS perpetrates even further ignorance. “Witchcraft malarkey” I believe is another quote from the main character. Everyone involved in this show should be ashamed.

(9) Lynn says:

I watched the first couple of minutes, then I changed the channel. I would rather watch the Weather channel than that drivel that they managed to pass of as entertainment. Although, with the way this episode went, I am not sure how they managed that. You know, I have an intention of ringing CBS up on this one too….it was just too stupid and ignorant.

(10) FishingCat says:

I actually only watched the show to see how they would treat the Wiccan character, and it was beyond just cheesy. They portrayed her as a scatterbrained ditz who didn’t call the police “because there was nothing more that could be done for him,” cast a killing spell on the victim because he abused her cat, did a binding spell on one of the officers just to prove that magick is real, has a number of underage boys in her coven (at least one of whom does not have his parents’ permission), recites incantations in Latin, has a goat’s-head door-knocker, a pentagram doormat, and basically confirms all the negative comments that are made about Wicca by *being* a geek in a cape.

January 15, 2009 at 7:54 am
(11) Knevolyn says:

We watched it because we knew they were going to depict a witch. It was horrible. At one point the main character said that witchcraft was “malarkey”.

January 15, 2009 at 11:23 am
(12) HavenWood says:

I have watched all episodes of the show and like it. This episode did disappointment me. I do not care if the characters state opinons of others. That is what they do. I do care when the characters misstate facts. Some witches will cast negative spells. That is their right. Wiccans, specifically, adhere to the Wiccan Rede that will NOT allow such a spell as a “killing spell” to be cast. There was no need to bring the term Wicca into the plot. It was inaccurate and put a benign religion in a bad light.

Yes, it was terrible! My husband and I didn’t know whether to laugh or get angry over the misinformation…. so we did both. :(

January 15, 2009 at 12:37 pm
(14) Tracie says:

I’am so glad I did not watch the show. I saw the clip and it was a lousy way to percieve wicca and as I read on re: the comments made I wanted to seriously vomit! No wonder we are in the broom closet! Look at the way we are still percieved! A Jennifer Aniston movie coming out has a trailer that shows her attempting to date and the male says “Im a wiccan” “you know a male witch” and is percieved to be a lunatic! Enough is enough!

January 15, 2009 at 12:39 pm
(15) Vandreyer says:

Never seen it. Watched the little clip. So I take it the blonde hunk is The Mentalist? Yummy, lol, but beside the point. Sadly, there are “self-proclaimed wiccans” who know diddley about the religion and think they have to go in for all that silly foolery and they just perpetuate that same silly stereotype. Sounds like the episode was basically Scoobey Doo for adults. I liked that show ’cause they dealt with the paranormal but I was a kid and it took me a while to realize that all they were doing was saying NOTHING was real. Very disappointing. So what’s the nature of The Mentalist’s powers? If they are as I assume then they are trying to prove paranormal is false with paranormal resources?? They should have written into the script some reference to what a REAL wiccan is (as easy as someone downloading a pamphlet from a website and going ‘O, this chick doesn’t do that!’), but sadly they have the right to be as ignorant as everyone else. Too bad they are in a position to (ill) inform multitudes.

(16) spellcaster 24354 says:

Of course there will always be some one out there in the entertainment industry(if you can call it that!)that will always give out mis-information on things they know nothing about! It’s all about the ratings, sensationalism, and most of all MONEY!

January 15, 2009 at 3:53 pm
(17) Gunpowder says:

I saw the episode. The things they showed were completely untrue (a ‘death curse’ for example) and misleading. I had to admit, I’d hoped that they’d use the fact that it’s a popular new how to show Wicca in a more truthful light. Obviously this didn’t happen.

January 16, 2009 at 9:53 pm
(18) Tara says:

love the show but just like all movies, books, tv and even in real life Wicca is taken wrong. Richard Rimeriz the serial killer was a proclaimed satanist but always put up the wrong symbol. Most of the sterotypes come from teenagers like they said in the moving playing in cloaks. They dont know the real meaning behind it or how it isnt as cheesy as they made it out to be.

(19) Gravity says:

I haven.t watched tv in years, mainly cause “they” are all about misinforming everyone on everything. Raised christian scientist n newly pagan i.ve been used 2 “bad cult” tip of the nose stares. Instead of complaining about things (my deepest apologies, no disrespect intended) which you have no control over, try n remedy the situation. Properly inform people. Make a change yourself. In any way u can. ~Gravity

(20) Sienne says:

I don’t really mind any of it. It’s fiction. Sometimes writers get it right, sometimes they get it wrong, and lots of times they just don’t care enough to do the research. I understand that many people will swallow everything fed to them by that bright, shiny box, and, having no other desire to educate themselves properly, will believe pretty much anything it spews out at them. Personally, though, I dismiss most slights when presented in the format of fiction, whether aimed at my religion, lifestyle or even shoe preference.

As for the pentacles and candles, well, since that whole Satanist scare in the eighties, most actual cops would see that stuff and start sparking up the torches and sharpening the pitchforks; they’re now “trained” to spot occult items. And even the best trained boys in blue have imaginations that can run away with them.

It’s all good. I’ll save my ire for the public officials who should know better.

January 20, 2009 at 9:13 am
(21) Barbara says:

I watch the show weekly and normally find it entertaining. This episode could have been done well. It could have had real information, but is played on the stereotypes. How would other religions feel if they were singled out for this kind of treatment? Wiccan like Jews are the scapegoat. It is very sad.

January 20, 2009 at 9:14 am
(22) AJ says:

Sorry, but I couldn’t help but find it amusing that the female CBI character was the star of that teen “witch” movie, “The Craft”.
I only watched the clip, btw, not the episode. Don’t think I’ll see that show again. I also think that anyone who gets their information from TV is bound to be a misinformed individual anyway. Hopefully, people interested in knowing accuracy will stumble upon, oh say, this website. You do a great job, Patti!

January 20, 2009 at 9:37 am
(23) Lady Atlantis says:

i cnat beleive that Robin Tunny (SP?) The woman who played in the movie the craft would go along with it, oh course being in the craft would explain alot! whats worse i like the woman playing “the only witch in town” shes a good actress. all in all i was competely disapointed!

(25) Joni says:

I was so disapointed in my favorite show. I did watch the entire program and i felt that they needed to also broadcast an appology to everyone at the end. this could have set the pagan community back 150 years!!!

January 20, 2009 at 10:19 am
(26) nitedove says:

All witchy props aside, what bothered me most is that they dismissed the witch’s lifestyle as a reflection of her mental troubles. There were several remarks about witches being nothing more than trekkies; ‘Just geeks in clothes’ is what I believe I heard at least twice. Had they left out the killing spell and the witch’s troubled past, it would have been much more acceptable to me. In the end, it’s the dad who killed his own son but that doesn’t seem to come across strong enough in this episode.

January 20, 2009 at 10:26 am
(27) dawnawren says:

It was truely offensive. I watched it and it made me sick. They referred to Wiccan’s as misfits and mentally ill. There were inferrances that we worked with demons and evil forces. It was stuffed with false information and could almost be called propaganda. My teenage daughters also saw through it and commented that we really should write a letter to someone.

January 20, 2009 at 10:30 am
(28) Marj says:

I kept hoping that the show would put a positive spin on Witchcraft, but NOOO, the “Witch” was not only happy to have killed a child with her spell, but she turned out to be a lying, mentally deranged person, who taught teenagers without their parents’ knowledge.
OMG - WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP???
We POSITIVE and MENTALLY STABLE Witches need to protest, protest, protest!!!
Come out of the broom closets and become POSITIVE role models to the world.
A couple of my Witch friends and I are actually starting a Black Hat Society in our rural northern Wisconsin area to show them we are fun loving, mentally stable, positive people who care about our community.

January 20, 2009 at 10:50 am
(29) Nelda Adnyl says:

Yes, it was full of misinformation and bad acting. The young woman playing the part of a “witch” gave out so much wrong info, it was incredible. No where in the show did I hear anything about the Rede, or any other truths about Wicca. Even my husband, who is no longer a practicing believing Wiccan, said it was all wrong. He should know, he’s been married to two witches.

January 20, 2009 at 10:53 am
(30) Deb says:

I was VERY disappointed in the show. I think CBS or ANY station for that matter, should research a subject before airing a show about it. To this day, there is still so much misinformation and myths about Wicca and CBS just helped prove that.

(31) roberto starr says:

MM all I did not get a chance to watch the episode but i saw the clip on here and i am very dissapointed for a few reasons… especiall hurtfull to me(and it may sounds stupid to others) robin tunney played a witch in a movie called the craft.. and i just watched last night again, she should have seen and maybe said something about the ridiculous way they were portraying wiccans, being that in the movies special features she herself speaks about how the wiccans were being portrayed in a possitive way in the movie,,, i just find it funny that she seems like such a strong willed woman and she could not say anything on the subect…9sorry for rambling im very upset)

(32) Jeff Kincaid says:

Gee thanks Beth….as a life long Trekkie AND Wiccan, I appreciate that…golly.

Anyway, no, I did not catch the show. I don’t watch it anyway, seemed stupid. So really, I guess you just have to consider the source.

January 20, 2009 at 11:11 am
(33) Nicole says:

My husband is an electrician and adore pointing out gross errors in movies and TV where they just get is way wrong on how electrical stuff works. This weeks mentalist was my turn. It was so cliche. That part this upset me is the careless way she was talking about her “killing spells” and that the fact one worked seemed to thrill her like a souffle that had not fallen, not that a human life had ended. So much for the law of three. Just seemed just every way they could portray us like a bunch of deluded loons they did. So sad.

January 20, 2009 at 11:17 am
(34) MystycDawn says:

I love the show and am very used to the Wiccan religion being misrepresented. I just laughed. Really, there are many more things to worry about than a TV show. Take it in stride…..

We all know what we are and what we stand for. It isn’t worth the negative energy to get angry every time I see it happen.

January 20, 2009 at 11:32 am
(35) Minerva9544 says:

This is just a sad reminder that each and every one of us that follow a Pagan, or for that matter any non-mainstream, path must hold oneself to a higher standard. Like many minorities, we have to work twice as hard to get half the credit. Remember, _you_ may be the _only_ Pagan/Jew/Muslim/Evangelical, etc. that someone ever meets and he or she may judge the rest of the group based on that single encounter.

On a lighter note, The Mentalist never really caught on @ my house. It seems like a lame-masquerading-as-serious imitation of Psych on the USA Network. And before anyone hits me with the “they’re mocking true psychics” stick, it’s done so tongue in cheek that it’s practically a call to Miss Cleo!

January 20, 2009 at 11:48 am
(36) silverwillow says:

I agree with Mysticdawn, I watch the show, thought it was entertaining fiction…joked with my bf I do killing spells all the time…and he looked at me like really…I was like are you serious? that is not what wiccans practice…I did not get angry..why get angry..Silverwillow

(37) Dracena says:

I too left a little note on CBS’s website - I am expecting a response/apology any day now :)

I think the part I found most disturbing was that they insinuated that the only people who would be interested in our path was people with a troubled childhood and mental problems.

Perhaps we should write our own episodes for all the tv series and give them the correct information!

January 20, 2009 at 12:01 pm
(38) Jeri says:

I saw the episode and found myself saying out loud “well, that’s not right!” I am married to a cradle catholic who lets me embrace my religion, and even he was surprised at the content of the show.

January 20, 2009 at 12:04 pm
(39) Blkcatwm says:

I didn’t see this episode, but I have watched the show…from the start the main character makes comments that psychics are fake and only out to get your money…just because his character pretended to be psychic and do that. Unfortunately, the show isn’t that great, the chief detective had played the main character in the movie, “The Craft”…it’s too bad the writers are idiots. But I’m still wondering how the show Psych is still on…it’s also about pretending to be psychic and duping people. I’ll stick to Criminal Minds & Bones.

January 20, 2009 at 12:47 pm
(40) Malia says:

I watched it and I, too, left my opinions with CBS, to which they have not responded. I told them that I thought it very unprofessional to film about a subject they obviously did not even google about. Reminds me of school days when you had to write a report and never read the book. I was insulted and angered over the blatant reaffirmation of the misinformation that plagues our religion.
Anyway, I think we need more sex abuse programs about catholic priests, at least everyone knows the truth about that! Entertaining, huh???

January 20, 2009 at 12:59 pm
(41) Lady Undine says:

I was totally sickened by that episode. Totally unrealistic and full of nonsense.

“They portrayed her as a scatterbrained ditz who didn’t call the police “because there was nothing more that could be done for him,” cast a killing spell on the victim because he abused her cat…”

Hey, abuse my cat and I may send a nasty spell your way too, but I’d at least have the sense to NOT tell the cops about it.

January 20, 2009 at 1:31 pm
(43) blaxraven says:

You know with all of this crap on tv with the mis-information about people and their personal beliefs - it still mystifies me. About the nature of how people get their information and run with it - without the consequences of ‘looking it up’ seeking out the truth to what has been put in fornt of them - I guess this is what is called ‘blind faith’, huh?
Anyway, I did and still miss Buffy and Angel

January 20, 2009 at 1:49 pm
(44) Amanda says:

The show just lost a viewer. The portrayal of witches was disgusting and full of old stereotypes and misinformation. Yuck!

January 20, 2009 at 2:26 pm
(45) Annabelle says:

The whole episode was very offensive. The woman who was the town “witch” was portrayed as someone escaping her past by creating a witch persona and enticing young teenagers to do her bidding. There was even a ceremony presented as an “almost” sacrifice of a young teen boy.The police arrive in the knick of time. And the main character, the Mentalist, says to his partner that there is no such thing as Magick. True Dark Age mentality. If you haven’t seen it, wait until it’s rerun to check out how ridiculous the whole show is.

January 20, 2009 at 2:34 pm
(46) Rachel says:

I have to say, I love the Mentalist, it’s one of my favorite shows, but this episode really annoyed me. It was very clear the the writers didn’t do any research on what wicca actually is. I mean, casting death spells? Silliness.

January 20, 2009 at 3:31 pm

I was outraged. OMG. I justed started screaming at the television. I actually like the show but they ticked me off. Oh, by the way I am trekker. so there. I got on the phone with one of my friends and tottally vented. They could not have gotten it more wrong.

January 20, 2009 at 7:23 pm
(51) Nahoc says:

“Sounds like the episode was basically Scoobey Doo for adults.”
nails it :-)
I watched it. Never watched the show before. It was weak. If they had stuck to just “witchcraft” or “occult”, it woulda been ok stupid crap (like Scoobey Doo) but they singled out Wicca. If they did a show about a looney tune xian cult, they wouldn’t call them Presbyterians.

January 20, 2009 at 9:58 pm
(52) Pantograph says:

While I agree that much of the portrayal of Wiccans in The Mentalist was well off the mark, it was still interesting enough to encourage me to find out more about actual Wicca. Hollywood and TV are almost always inaccurate in the way any arcane subject is shown, so don’t get feel persecuted (although I can understand why this is a sensitive area for Wiccans).

Generally, I enjoy the show. I suspect the vast majority of “psychics” are total frauds, so exposing their tricks is a fair tactic.

January 20, 2009 at 11:28 pm
(53) Winter_Dragon says:

I really like “The Mentalist” - it is an interesting show. And if someone didn’t mention, in reply to another post, this isn’t a show about psychics. In fact, he claims no psychic abilities at all. I find the show entertaining at least.

I thought the lead woman looked familiar…I had no idea it was her though! Shocking.

As for this episode….it was horrible. They had him saying “it’s not real” or it’s “malarky” etc. The worst part was them having him claiming it was black magic. Or - someone who believes in black magic - practicing it.

Irresponsible…that is what that show was. On top of ill-informed and idiotic!

(54) Wendy says:

I found the show to be amusing - it is a TV show, people! It’s not meant to portray facts - bell’s, the main character is a self proclaimed psychic fraud.

(55) rindill says:

well, at least it put a “show” on the media - (what’s the “any press, even misinformed - is press!”) But at least it bodes an awareness, and there’s quite a bit of bad history to follow - -look at it this way - If someone can’t be brave enough to real look at a subject, it will be invisible, they will either ignore it, fight it, try to undermine it -
At least the awareness/mention is there, (hey! we need a plot and a hook!) and obviously they have some idea that witches just might have mysterious things - (IE merely not understood)) - But Dang! They blew my whole modus operandi - (LOL!)Maybe I should lay off the herbal tea, huh? LOLL

January 21, 2009 at 4:01 am
(56) Shadoie says:

I did watch it and I was pretty pissed. It ranged between calling Wicca stupid and grouping us in with Trekkies (not that being a Trekkies is a bad thing. I am one!!) and at no point did they acknowlege it as a real religion or anything more then a group of misfits trying to fit in together or joining in it to piss off thier parents. The ritual they showed was nothing close to what a true ritual should be and basically gave the impression that all witchcraft is either fake or black magic.

January 21, 2009 at 8:09 am
(57) Edward Morbius says:

What was aired on TV is the product of lazy, sleazy writers, producers etc., looking to make a fast buck. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I rate the so-called “News” with the same degree of credibility. (remember V for Vedetta).

It is doubtfull that you can change all of TV. You might get them to change or cancel the show, but TV is all about money. Think of it is as the traveling medicine show of the Old West, now in an electronic format. It peddles medicine,(literally),by appealing to the lowest common demonator. Giving them what they want. Cheap thrills. Politicians and despots have used this for years.

There is an old saying that goes “You are known by your works” and “You are what you do”.

I have been in Wicca since 1976 and work as a psychiatric nurse, so this gives me an inside look at the truly sick people. Additionally my choice of becoming a nurse came through the advice of my HPS. Some of my co-workers in my department are former police officers, so I’ve had a chance to have heart to heart talks about everything, including Wicca.

The response of my co-workers has been one of respect, curiosity and a desire to know more.

You can’t change the world. Just one person at a time by your example. This is where my job comes in. What I hope people will see is Wicca as a religion. Magick is a natural companion, just a miracles are a natural companion to Christianity. Hopefully through me, my collegues, superiors and subordinates see - maturity, responsibilty and compassion.

I know how you feel. Every time I get exposed to this form of mental polution, it sets my teeth on edge filling me with thoughts that are equally vile as the garbage I’ve been exposed to. If I allow it to “get to me”, it puts me as the same level as the viewers who wallow in it.

The best advice I can give is “Consider the Source” and let it go.

I agree with most of the sentiments expressed here. The portrayal of the pagan lifestyle was very unrealistic and dismissive. Unfortunate.

At the end of the show, the Mentalist asked the Priestess to put in a good word with the Goddess. He recognized Wicca as a religion, and isn’t he supposed to notice “everything”? This show, if you saw the whole thing, did more to dispel the myths about Wicca by starting with prejudice and fear and ending with peace and goodwill. What are we looking for? A wholesale and immediate end to prejudice? Ain’t gonna happen, people! Maybe this show should be viewed without our OWN brand of prejudice. )O(

All comments made thus far hit so many nails on the head. My main frustration was their repetative insinuation that Wicca and Witchcraft are one in the same,i.e., if you’re Wiccan then you’re also a Witch. Dear Goddess Hecate…..who came UP with that bunk? Research into the varying paths is clearly out of the range of possibility for their writers.

(65) Ariel says:

The entire premise of “The Mentalist” is that psychic anything and supernatural everything is a load of crap. It belittles most anybody who believes otherwise.

Simon was supposedly a famous psychic (shades of John Edwards) and how it was all tricks, psychology and manipulation on his part. He has left it all behind and helps the California Bureau of Investigation with his keen observation skills and psychology tricks.

I feel rather insulted by the show since I do Tarot readings at local fairs. I don’t do any figuring of people out and telling them what they want to hear. Yes, the show is very derogatory to the metaphysical community.

Easy fellow Wiccans. If we get upset at every misrepresentation, at Halloween we would need to see a psychologist.
It’s Hollywood. In other words simply for entertainment value. The worst that will happen is that people will start to research Wicca and maybe even come away with a better understanding because of that.
Blessed Be.

I am so glad that this was brought up. I just sent in my complaint to CBS Programming. This is what I wrote:

My husband (a Christian) and I (Wiccan) were horrified at how The Mentalist portrayed a viable spiritual path/religion afforded the same rights as Christians, Judism, Islam.

Wicca does not worship Satan, it doesn’t even believe in Satan. It is a path based on Love, Harming None, and is earth based, not unlike our Native American beliefs.

The Pentagram is now allowed to be used on tombstones in Federal Cemetaries for Pagans who have fought and died for their country.

The Mentalist was filled with misinformation, stereotyping

If you treated Christianity the way they treated Wicca, there would be front page news and a huge out-cry!

You are promoting INTOLERANCE and HATE and MISCONCEPTION of a whole group of innocent people and their spiritual path by allowing that piece to be shown.

It is the same as if you portrayed African Americans as sub-humans as they did in the Characatures of the past.

We were so upset, we have decided not to ever watch The Mentalist again, unless they can make a future episode where they can undo the harm they have done to a viable religion/spiritual path.

That show was no different than what the KKK spouts.

Has anyone seen the movie The Craft? The chick that is the lead role was the “good witch” in that movie. Just thought it was ironic

Ariel! Thanx for outlining the premise of the show!!! I get it now. Well, just because an actress played the lead role in The Craft (wasn’t real thrilled with that movie either though) doesn’t mean she has any knowledge of what she portrayed. She’s an ACTRESS paid to act. I agree with the people who pointed out that, after all, it is just fiction. Yes, it’s a crying shame that they don’t try to enlighten while they entertain but such is life. All the hysteria over it smacks of the conservative hype over entertainment like Harry Potter and The DaVinci Code. This show is portraying specific people with specific agendas. And these particular people (FICTIONAL CHARACTERS) don’t happen to believe in magic. What a sad little life. But fictional.

I watched the entire show and thought it to be disgusting, with so much misinformation as to be pathetic. It casts witches and Wiccans in bad light. These writers need to get their facts straight and learn about the subjects they write about.

(71) phoenixredwolf says:

The writers of this show should learn before putting pen to paper, because they did a disservice to all Wiccans and witches. Stereotypes are hard enough to get over without misinformed idiots writing shows like this one.

Yeah, I had the show on in the background while I was READING! It was sort of lame. I usually like the show…the Mentalist is a hottie. Last night on CBS did anyone catch NUMBERS? They portrayed a psychic as a weird, creepy kinda guy. Then next Tues ? on NCIS (same network) they have some murder with a pentagram carved in the flesh. ??? Jeeze! Whassup with all this???

(73) THISTLE DOWNE says:

Well, I did not see it, but from reading some of the comments posted by others, it seems it sure would have been nice if these writers did a little research before creating this drivle…
Shows such as this, Charmed and any other misinformation they spew out at random really are very much responsible for the publics misunderstanding of Wicca as a whole, or any other alternate religion as well.

They’ve always said never believe what you see on TV, but unfortunately all too many take it as pure truth.

I was really disappointed to see ‘psych’ jumping on the “kooky” band wagon. You can see the episode on http://www.hulu.com/watch/54344/psych-earth-wind-and–wait-for-it
When a suspect identifies himself as Wiccan, Shawn shakes his hand and tells him, “it’s nice to meet a fellow weirdo” and then starts making things up about ‘the Earth Mother Spirit’. Pretty lame.
