Soothsaying Now OK in Livingston
Friday November 28, 2008
Remember the case in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, the municipality that tried to pass an "anti-soothsaying" ordinance? Back in October, a federal judge ruled that the ordinance would in fact be unconstitutional, and now the Livingston Parish council has decided to follow the advice of their attorney and repeal the ordinance. Interestingly, the council's attorney, Blaine Honeycutt, has been telling them all along that they'd lose any potential lawsuits on this one.
The whole thing started back in the spring, when Wiccan minister and shop owner Cliff Eakin filed a suit against the parish. Eakin, who was at the Monday night council meeting, said the repeal "was in the stars."
