Did You Shop Today?

Friday November 28, 2008
I didn't, because I can't imagine a worse way to spend a day than standing in line for hours, fighting with strangers over who gets the last Wii. In fact, since I dislike shopping the whole rest of the year too, I make a point of not going out on Black Friday. I'm keeping things minimal this year -- my friends will be blessed with a lot of baked goods for Yule, the little ones on my shopping list will most likely get some handmade snuggly fleece blankets, and lots of people will get books.

With the economy the way it is, everyone is kind of scaling back this year. For some tips on having a great Yule without breaking your piggy bank, you might want to read Have a Budget Friendly Yule. Also, we've been talking about money-saving holiday ideas over in the Forums, so stop in and check out Share Your Holiday $$ Saver Tips.

No, I didn’t. And I am very glad to not have been part of the madness that killed the unfortunate Walmart employee. It’s so frightening how easily manipulated people are. When “adults” can beat up a child over a doll, wow, that is really sad. And now this…. I despair.

I’m visiting family who lives in a small town and things weren’t busy at all, at least from someone who’s more used to larger places. The longest line we had was two people in front of us. Very calming to what I’m use to. Though I didn’t spend a buck, but that was probably because my arms were full with my aunt’s bags. I generally avoid the stores until after New Year’s though when possible and just shop online for anything I need. The Internet has the same good deals most of the time.

We make it a point to try and get the shopping done *before* Thanksgiving and then the only thing left is to get a few stocking stuffers… No shopping today for us! We’ve tried it before many years back and the character of people seems to change on this dark day.

Not only was a Wal-mart employee killed at that store, but a lady who was 8 months pregnant had a miscarriage. So there were two deaths caused by greedy inconsiderate people who wanted to save a couple bucks. Guess these shoppers forgot to remember what they were thankful for the day before.

I just read a report that two people were shot and killed in a Toys R Us this morning as well. Seriously, who takes a gun to Toys R Us? People are insane.

patti,
who spent the day hanging out at home instead

Alas, I had to live it as I work in retail. Thankfully, most people came in, got what they wanted and went home. We had a few jerks and people who wanted to complain that we were out of things despite the fact that they waited until less than an hour before closing to even come in to look (seriously, if the store opened at 6am, and it’s now 8pm, did you really think we’d still have a phone that retails normally for $129.99 and was on sale for only $49.99?).

My fiance and I did most of our shopping online early. :-)

No way, no how. I have never done the “black friday” thing. I can’t imagine many things worse… Maybe getting my toenails ripped out with needle-nose pliers, that’s about it.

Seriously, my ex did it one year and swore she’d never do it again. If it was too much for her, I don’t know how anyone else can deal with it. I buy onlne, mostly.

I went to that American Thinker link and it doesn’t seem a reputable site. They have no link to an original article with info about the woman miscarrying and ALL the other articles I can find say she was only held for observation and one has a direct quote that she in fact did not miscarry. http://wcbstv.com/local/walmart.worker.trampled.2.875747.html Still a horrible situation though. How sick are you when you argue and refuse to leave a store where a person was just killed???

Yeah, according to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/28/black.friday.violence/index.html) the pregnant woman is okay, and so is her unborn child. Still really scary tho.

I’m filling in at the local bookstore tonight, helping out for the holiday rush, and between crazy shoppers and the usual Saturday night teen invasion, I’m sure it will be absolutely delightful.

My family was in town for Thanksgiving. I jokingly offered to send them to Mall of America on Friday. The decibel level of their refusal was overwhelming :-)

We avoided Wal-Fart altogether, going downtown to the small shops. I bought about $50 in yarn, and we spent another $50 or so at the hardware store, where I got a boiling-water canning set and my husband got some odds and ends. Yay for waaay too much crafting!

Only thing I went out for was to rent some movies and a sandwich. I used to work at the unholy thing that is Wal-Mart. So, yeah, no thank you.

I am so glad not to be there any more. It ruined holidays for me. People are so cruel and petty around them. Especially to the people that are just trying to do their job and are trying to do a service for them.
