SC Gets Ready for "I Believe" Plates
Saturday November 8, 2008
Despite the fact that it's at the center of a lawsuit, the controversial "I Believe" license plate is headed to the production line. The South Carolina DMV says they've received enough applications that they can start producing the plates, which feature a stained glass window and a cross. The watchdog group Americans United filed the suit in May, saying that featuring Christian symbolism implies government endorsement of one faith over others.
Now, here's something kind of neat. According to the DMV website, your non-profit group can request a specialty plate, and if you have 400 pre-paid applications, they'll approve it if you meet all the other criteria. So, you know, if you're a Pagan group in South Carolina, incorporated as a non-profit, you could potentially create your own version of the "I Believe" plate. You could stick a pentacle on there, along with a Thor's hammer, an awen, and maybe Cthulu just for good measure. How fun would that be?
