Magical Mondays: String

Monday October 27, 2008

How would you use string in your magical workings?

I did a working this week involving this item, and I'm curious to see how the rest of you might use it. It's something we all have lying around the house -- much like our other Magical Mondays items! -- and easy to come by. It also has a LOT of magical potential!

If you're new to Magical Mondays, here's how it works. Each Monday I'll post a photo of an item -- and the catch is, that it's *not* going to be a traditional magical object. No crystals, herbs, or other things typically associated with spellwork or magic. The idea is to see how many magical uses we can come up with for the item. No right answers, no wrong answers, just sharing ideas. Post your suggestions in the Comments section, and see what other readers have to say as well!

To see previous editions of Magical Mondays, you can read here: Magical Mondays. Last week's not-so-magical item was a pile of toy cars, and there were a few really outside-the-box ideas. Readers recommended using a toy car to provide protection to your vehicle, a toy fire truck to protect one's home, and to find direction in your life. You can still contribute to that conversation, so feel free to chime in if you missed it.

So this week's item is one that seems very practical indeed. As I mentioned, nearly everyone has it around the house, and even if you don't, it's not hard to find some. This week, our item is string. You can use a short length or an entire ball, hemp or cotton twine, we'll even include fishing line and other synthetics if it works for your purpose. So how are you going to use yours?

(1) spellcaster says:

Greetings!
String or twine or even yarn can be used to cast a circle if at first it has been soaked in salt water and then dried.
Another magickal working for string or actually yarn is knot magick tying knots for each desire or working to be achieved.
I do have a self composed yarn spell using 7 strands of colored yarn.It is a braid of life blessing for newborn or young children.I will post it in it’s entirety in the forums section.
Brightest Blessings!
&
Have An Amazingly Magickal Day!!

(5) DB says:

I sometimes us strings or cords in a binding spells. This does not hurt anyone or anything but does stop any nastiness. You can also bind happiness, prosperity or good health to you and your family

(6) Di says:

In the spring I go out in the woods and cut wild grape vine and make it into round forms and dry it. When the forms are dry I use string and either beads or stones with holes drilled into them and weave ‘dream catchers’ adding the beads as I go.The feathers I use are either feathers that I’ve picked up over the year (wild) like when the wild birds molt or my own birds when they molt. Dream Cathers are from the Native American Tribes and are used to ward off ‘bad dreams’ or nightmares. They are hung over the bed and ‘catch’ the bad dreams, the sun then burns them away.Legend has it that ‘Mother Spider’ gave them as a gift to the people.
(feathers are hung by the string or leather strips on the bottom of the dream catcher that allow the ‘good dreams’ to flow into the dreamer.)

(7) Kat says:

I have a special jar that I fill with all manner of string, ribbon and twine, etc. I’ve used string to “remove,” things….letting the wind blow it away; the birds always find it for their nest building!
Anyway, I’ve just completed an “Advanced Magick” class, and will be moving into a “Crafts-of-the-Craft,” class. Our HPs is going to teach us some Knot Magick techniques! An excellent choice, Patti, as always~!

(8) Cpl. Michael Marts USMC says:

I consecrate the string and then wrap some of it around my rifle, sidearm and the .50 cal on our Humvee for protection against stoppage, mis-fires or damage to keep me and my fellow Marines safe on our next tour back to Iraq. Wrapping the Blessed string around my wrist and ankle also helped prevent against injuries and enabled healing. A Wiccan Warrior needs all the help he can get. Blessed Be everyone.

(9) Tammy says:

I use leather ’string’ with knots for protection, wisdom, & strength around wooden beads,(for grounding) to make a bracelet for a loved one.

BTW – Cpl. Marts: Tie a few knots from me for you and your team. Be safe, and thank you!!

(10) Lynn says:

I use string to cut the negativity from a situation. The string represents “me” or my Chakra self. I cut the string into small pieces as I say what it is that I want removed, the negative things. I visualize the string being a black color (all the negativity) and as I cut the small pieces off, I visualize it turning a pure white.

Many kudos to you Cpl. Marts, may you and your fellow troops be safe. Many thanks too for all that you have sacrificed. Blessed Be!

Some excellent ideas! I actually used mine in a working to represent a spiderweb (think “oh what a tangled web we weave”).

Michael, thank you for your service to our country. May you and your brothers in arms stay safe.

(13) Meadowhawk says:

I have used string knotted and wrapped into a tangled ball to represent issues in my life that are a “tangled mess”. I then place it on my pentacle during the waning moon cycle for “composting”. At the end of my spell I cut it into tiny pieces and ritually bury the little shreds to let the earth finish the job.

(14) Anavrin says:

I would use red string to “bind” two people together in a loving relationship (with their full permission of course!) either actually binding their hands or binding two poppets together that had been made in their likeness. If the latter, I’d then give them the poppets so they could renew their commitment whenever they wanted or, remove the binding if they are no longer going to be together.

(15) Kate McGuire says:

Braided string or hair can be used to “hold” a spell in stasis until the right time to release it. Traditionally used with weather spells that is not their only uses. Protection spells can work with this medium. This would be more than a general protection spell. The type of spell for this is when you perceive immanent danger and it brings to focus a whole ritual that was used to charge it in a few seconds.

First off as a fellow military veteran I want to salute and thank you Cpl Marts for you and your fellow soliders who put their lives on the line. I would be honored to tie some string together for you to keep you guys safe. I can ditto to what most everyone has said about string. I use it for binding, casting a circle, hair and such for my poppets, knot magick and for handfast ceremonies.

(20) Marbles says:

A friend who was raised in the path she follows gave me the following string use: Finding a bit of red string or thread is a good omen, and tying it to yourself or one of your belongings will bind that good fortune to you. Shortly after hearing this, I found a bit of red string from my long term boyfriend’s bath towel lying on the floor, and tied it to a ring I happened to be wearing. He… *blush*… proposed. We’re quite happy together. This is a powerful one!
