New Documentary Looks at Potter Fans

Saturday September 27, 2008
Although I haven't actually sat and watched anything on MTV since about 2001, there's an upcoming documentary that looks kind of interesting. Filmmaker Josh Koury looks at the Harry Potter phenomenon in his movie, We Are Wizards. Koury looks at the complex relationships between Warner Brothers, J.K. Rowling, and the fan community. The film also touches on the fringe anti-Potter groups, and visits with Carol Matriciana, an "occult researcher" whose research mainly seems to consist of showing Christians why Harry Potter is bad.

The film opens in New York on November 14.

I’ll go to see this, if just for the section about Wizard Wrock! I love it!

I’m a casual Potter fan. The movie looks kind of fun, but wouldn’t pay to see it. I’ve got an aunt who’s on the side of Harry Potter is evil and satanic so I get to see that side of humanity. At least I’m good enough to sit back and just laugh at her ignorance.

Here’s what some people seem to have for gotten about the Harry Potter movies.

THEY ARE FANTACY…..not reality.
They are only movies, nothing more.

I love the Harry Potter books and movies and have all of them. I really fail to grasp what is so evil about telling kids that family, friendship, commitment, and sacrifice are important. Or that it is not our abilities but our CHOICES which define us. Every episode has several grains of such soul strengthening wisdom. And when Ron says, “Hermione, you’re a girl,” and she retorts, “Oh, well spotted,” I laugh out loud.

I’m a great fan of the Harry Potter books and movies, prefer the books. Personally I never got what they complain about all the characters are C of E, not Wiccans. So it is a very christian view of magic so if we don’t have a problem why should they?

Right-wing Christians have a problem with anyone relying on themselves to make something come to pass. It all has to be god doing it. Anything else is of the devil. Right-wing Christians aren’t the only Christians they just think they are.
