WM3: Hearing Postponed Until Sept. 24

By , About.com GuideSeptember 10, 2008

Follow me on:

The evidentiary hearing for Damien Echols which was scheduled for September 8 has been postponed. Judge David Burnett, who was slated to hear evidence in the case of the West Memphis Three, only had a few days to review evidence following the August 30 cutoff for filings in the case. Barnett is expected to draft an order to reschedule the hearings, possibly for Sept. 24, at some point this week.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Judge Burnett "still has the option of making a ruling without holding any hearings." Burnett was the judge when Echols and the other two men in the case were convicted back in 1993.

Well I think that the judge should tae himself off of the case seeing as he is biased against Damien in the first place and iI think that any new evidence presented to this judge won’t make a difference. But I do pray to Mother IsIs that he gets out of prison soon.

I totally agree. I think that a new judge should be appointed because this one is probably going to try to withold the original judgement, not only to protect his reputation, but of those officers who were wrong in the first place. I believe that they knew they were arresting the wrong men to begin with and they certainly do not want to face the blackeye Arkansas will get if it comes out that they arrested 3 teenagers and purposely charged them for crimes they did not commit. I often wonder how these people sleep at night knowing they convicted kids who were in no way attached to the murders. I am sure Damien, Jesse, and Jason have paid dearly for these crimes at the hand of other prisoners as Varner is not known to be a nice prison. This injustice needs to be corrected!!!

I do not understand why it is taking so long to free these innocent men. They should have never been convicted of this horrible crime. Now after all these years how many other children may have been killed because the real killer (killers) were never even looked for. This is one of the worst miscarriages of justice ever. I do not know how the stupid Judge Burnett can sleep at night. What an idiot. So are the other people involved in this, knowing that these young men have been innocent all along. Wake up Arkansas and get these men out of prison!!!!

I would like to know if any further updates on a trial or release of these three men have occured. I was also disgusted and sickened when reviewing this case for a criminology class and am not surprised that the politics of this country being what they are, that they are still left in prison with their lives being taken away. It was horrifying what was done to the three little boys, and someone needs to open back up the investigation and put the sick individual still living free, out of his misery! This whole country needs a revolution to free us all from the Capitalistic Machine of self interest, power hungry politicians that control us like chess pieces. When will the masses stop being so blind, stupid and gullible? Hang in there Damien – J & J. Revolt People!! “V”
