Envisioning the Future with Pomona

Saturday August 16, 2008
August 13 was the festival of Pomona, a rather obscure but still significant Roman deity. Pomona was the goddess of orchards and fruit trees, and if you live in the northern hemisphere, chances are good that you'll be able to pick some fresh goodies right off the branch pretty soon. When I mentioned to a west-coast friend that I was doing a profile of Pomona, she told me, "Oh, you've got to see the mural!"

Apparently, in the town of Pomona, California, there is an absolutely lovely mural created a few years back by artist Kevin Stewart-Magee and several others. It's called Envisioning the Future, and features Pomona herself on the side of a building, gazing out over the Los Angeles area. In it, there are subdivisions and landfills, but also inspired visions of the past and future. Renderings of the area's rural and agricultural history are depicted, as well as hopes of returning orchards to the nearby hills once more. The piece is just amazing, and you can see it all at the artist's website: Envisioning the Future.

Hm, that’s weird. I clicked on the link in the story — which worked a few days ago — and it didn’t work. But when I went to the artist’s main page, I could go straight to the gallery. Try cutting and pasting this into your browser: http://web.mac.com/sm_murals/Site/Gallery/Pages/Envsioning_the_Future_Mural.html

If that doesn’t work, visit http://www.kevinstewartmagee.com/ and click on “gallery”.

Your link to “Envisioning the Future” has been ‘hi-jacked & held for ransom’ by a firm in either the Netherlands or Germany…the reason I know is that the same thing happened to our website too. Rather than pay the $8,000.000 ‘ransom’ to the crooks (which we didn’t have anyway), we just let them keep it & we had to start over with a new website! >:-(
