Monday August 11, 2008

What magical things can you do with a pair of rain boots?

Ready for this week's Magical Mondays item? I'm loving this -- some of the answers you guys have presented for previous items have been fabulous, so I can't wait to see what you have to say about this one.

If you're new to Magical Mondays, this is a new discussion I've started here on the blog. Each week (on Monday, obviously) I'll post a mundane sort of item with a photo -- you probably won't see anything that's considered a "traditional" magical item. No crystals, herbs, or statues of pink unicorns. The idea is to see how many magical uses we can come up with for the item. No right answers, no wrong answers, just sharing ideas. Post your suggestions in the Comments section, and see what other readers have to say as well!

To see previous editions of Magical Mondays, you can read responses (and still contribute) here:

  • Salt & Pepper Shakers
  • Buttons
  • Snakeskin.

  • This week's item: a pair of rain boots. Use one or use them both, in your choice of color! What are you going to do with yours?

    (1) Dreamseeker says:

I think it would be great to paint them up. And use them when picking things out of your garden. Or have a ritual in the rain to give thanks, for rain that make everything grow.

    (2) Ryan says:

How about a “Rainboot Ritual” to help out in a situation that could become “deep crap.”
Or you could paint them so that they match your ritual robe, so you don’t get frost-bitten in the snow at Yule-time.

    (3) Rowan Phoenix says:

How about as planters for your herbs. They could also be used to draw moisture to where it is needed most.

    (4) BeBe says:

Well, if I wildcrafted (and I wish I lived in an area where I could), I would paint them and enchant them to use for harvesting, and I would instill them with luck and hope for a powerful harvest. I would only use them for that. If you wanted to get really crafty, you could figure out a way to attach your boline to the outside of it, like a sheath.

    (5) Waleli says:

Thanks Patti, I found it. Don’t know why I couldn’t find it from “My Yahoo Page”, (I have you saved there.) I suppose it has not updated… Hmmm?
I have an idea for attaching the boline to the side of the boot… At hardware stores you can find small canvas sheaths for small tools, these are usually hung on the belt. Maybe a person could attach it to one of the boots with velcro.
I like the idea of enchanting them for the garden.

    (6) Thessaly says:

In my bedroom, with a spell for added protection against pregnancy!

    (7) Rev. Zak Zennii says:

I could see using them in a protection spell, maybe a spell to protect you from something that logic says is harmless, but your intuition says “watch out” – kinda like cold rain, logic say “it’s only water”, but you could get a cold from wet feet.

Also, they could be blessed as a charm for those times where you have to trudge through a messy situation to stay on your chosen path.

Hmmm. There must have been some magick in those old rain boots you found :D

    (8) Kat says:

First thing I came up with was a blessing ritual, as in “raining blessings upon (whatever)”

    August 15, 2008 at 10:00 am
    (9) erica bishop691 says:

i liked the raining blessings, That was my first thought, too.
A ritual for gardening, was what i have come up with.
I never use them, and so I dont go out into the rain, much.
But that was the best I can come up with!

    (10) LD says:

How about for astral projection? You could use these to help you visualise ‘traveling’ through whatever. Since I have never attemped this, I would rather use them for reminders to walk in anothers shoes before judging. Or in my case, as a reminder that I can always leave a bad situation since my ‘boots’ were definitely made for walking…walked away from two mean men so far and can again :) so these would be my reminder of strength.

    (11) TheDesertLily says:

I’d paint flowers on the rainboots set them in the garden among the plants and the fairies could use them to dance around the garden.

    August 15, 2008 at 12:06 pm
    (12) Dancer says:

I would use them in sympathetic magick when trying to bring needed rain.

    August 15, 2008 at 12:21 pm
    (13) Moonshadow says:

Life inst about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain. Celebrate, sing and honour the all, let the rain wash away all the troubles. Let the boots symbolize the joyous rain.

    August 15, 2008 at 12:46 pm
    (14) Sherri says:

My first thought was to bless the boots to bring about healing and growth where ever you step with them – so then use them for gardening or along river banks. Like a conduit for your energy going back to Mother Earth. Thanks, Patti – you are awesome!

    August 15, 2008 at 1:04 pm
    (15) Luna H. says:

I would enchant them with intent of wonder – the kind of wonder we experience when we were children splashing in the mudpuddles then wear them to do exactly that next time it rains. If no rain was in the offing, I can always create a puddle with my garden hose. Such childish innocence and wonder will definately spark my creativity as I hit blocks to my creative efforts – in my case writer’s block. thanks, Patti for sparking such creative ideas with this lovely blog! (16) buddhabelly says:

rain boots are suppose to keep your feet dry! so i would use them for a spell to keep me grounded and protected.

    August 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm
    (17) SpellCaster says:

I would charge the boots with positive energy to give me that extra boost to wear on my sometimes muddy journies on the path of life!We all know that in every life a little rain must fall!
    lessings to you Patti!

    August 15, 2008 at 10:05 pm
    (18) Rosie says:

How about using them to help with a rain spell? You could even use them to represent the water element. Who says things have to be traditional?

    August 16, 2008 at 12:24 am
    (19) Lorna Maridel says:

I would first bless and send nurturing energy to the boots, then wear them when gardening.

I can also see them being used in ritual when I want something or someone to quickly exit my part of the universe. Or perhaps use them to draw a new quality towards myself.

And last but not least, the most magical use of the boots would be dressup for my grandbabies.

Thanks for the fun Patti, blessings,LM

    (20) Angelyn says:

    “Puddle Jumpers”

There is nothing better than puddle jumping, Create you own chant or affirmation while jumpin IN the puddle… ahh the magick of the rain.

    Blessed Be,
    Angelyn

    (21) Annie says:

my thoughts went toward a protection spell. Followed by a thought of leaving them by the front door to act as a useful decoration. You could dry your wet gloves over the top opening of the boot. they could hold the newspaper. Harry Potter used one as a portkey, maybe it could be given as a present- filled with brochures of places to travel, for the person who is down-in-the-dumps.

    (22) judi says:

My grandson owns a pair of these exact boots, and the magic he creates with them is playing in the water and splashing up to his head in them to the delight of all.. watching a child’s delight in water and boots is very magical indeed…..

    (23) Mary Wood says:

What a fantastic idea Patti – looking for magical uses in the random mundane! Being pretty dirt poor and not one to waste money even when it’s good, I’ve always felt the best Magickal store out there is Home Depot. That and scavenging the literal junkyard I currently reside inside of.

As to the rain boots, I rather like the wading-through-crap idea at the start of this thread of comments.

    August 17, 2008 at 4:54 pm
    (24) Hyacinth says:

Wow, I wish I had thought of this before, since my own rainboots get a lot of use. What I’m going to do is draw symbols and write words on the bottom (probably in henna or turmeric, as that’s slightly more earth friendly than a sharpie) so that each step I take walks these things (health, love, abundance, etc) into my life, and into the environment I’m traveling in!

    (25) paganwiccan says:

Can I just say, you guys rock? I’m seeing so many creative answers for all of our “Magical Mondays” items. One of the ideas behind this was to be able to show “new folks” and even some of the veterans that (a) there’s magic to be found everywhere and (b) you don’t need to go out and spend a fortune on supplies when you can use stuff you’ve already got.

You all have managed to go above and beyond on both counts. Absolutely awesome.

Oh, and the “rain boots as pregnancy prevention” is hilarious — and yet perfect!

    (26) Artistic Mystic says:

The first thought that came into my mind when I saw rain boots is a flower vase. I’ve used a bright odd boot (the other was lost somewhere) as a flower pot: pick bright, big, blooming flowers and pair them in a bright boot to sit in your window and banish negativity on the dreary (perhaps rainy?) days.

    (27) Anavrin says:

Since I do not have, nor have ever had, a pair of real rain galoshes/boots, for me to put a pair on would be the beginning of a new adventure. I think I would by some washable paints or markers and “create” my own destiny/destination on the boots. I’d then put them on and let them take me where I want to go!

    August 22, 2008 at 11:29 am
    (28) FreeOak says:

I think I would use one boot for
my husband and I and the other as
a gift. The magickal boot would
hold a magickal shovel to shovel
out and banish all the negative
    carp we may be experiencing.

Or it could hold this year’s
besom. Add a besom to the one
that is a gift, too, to sweep
    out the negativity…to banish,
and to protect. One can add proper
gemstones to the handles of shove/besom
    or boots.

    (29) Selqet, The Voice says:

In New Zealand we had a song that went with rain boots, which we called Gumboots…

    “Gum boots are wonderful,
    Gum boots are swell –
    They keep out the water,
And they keep in the smell…
    When you’re watching TV,
    You can always tell
When one of the blokes has take off
    His Gum boots.”

I think that I’d use them in binding spells.

    (30) LazyWitch says:

How about placing your blessed garden sand or soil in them and using them in your garden rituals. Instead of using salt for your circle outside in the garden (of course, we all know salting your soil isn’t a really good idea) use blessed sand or garden soil and tip the substance out of the boot as you walk the circle.

    (31) SKIttySKat says:

I have a pair of magic rain boots. they’re little black barn boots that have sat outside my door next to rosemary for awhile. Recently they fit my neice, so she wore them. Once she outgrew them, they came back to sit by rosemary, only now they also contain the magical energy of a three year okd.

use them to keep your *lil buddy* from bringing mud in the house after your chores.
