Magic in the Ancient Roman World

By , About.com GuideMarch 4, 2008

Follow me on:

Jan Claus Di Blasio of the Roman Forum offers up an interesting bit of insight about magic in the ancient Roman world. He discusses the early works of Plato, and the Greeks' rationalization between the use of magic and logic, and then carries that over into a discussion of curse tablets and other sympathetic magic within the classical age of Rome. Best of all, he provides a list of reading material for those who want to learn more. Nicely done article, with solid research behind it.

I appreciate what you wrote. Unfortunately I only had 1000 words to develop my topic.
I’m a recent graduate of Geneva University in Archaeology and Ancient History and as a pagan I’m particularly interested in ancient religions.

Oh by the way, it’s Jan Claus Di Blasio – there’s a typing mistake there.

I host a blog about His Dark Materials, the Pagan roots of Christianity and other heretical stuff. You’re welcome to come by and read my thoughts.

Last but not least, how did you find my article?

The Roman Forum isn’t particularly well known outside Rome and then again, it only serves the international community in the Eternal City.

Blessings

I’ve fixed my typo, so now your name is actually correct on my blog article — my apologies!

I actually stumbled across your article completely by accident, when I was looking for information as background for a short profile I was putting together on Religio Romana. Although my own flavor of Paganism leans towards the Celtic, I’m fascinated by the culture of the Romans as well, and when I learned that there were people out there practicing Religio Romana, I thought it was well worthy of a brief article under my “Pagan Traditions” section.

I’ll definitely check out your blog — thanks for stopping in and saying hello!

Just an FYI for readers — the original article seems to have disappeared from the link above; however, there is a new article in its place at http://www.theromanforum.com/?p=3874
