Dead Fla. Goats Might Not Be Work of Pagans After All

By , About.com GuideJanuary 14, 2008

Follow me on:

In one of those moments that make me stop and go, "No kidding, super-genius!", Florida authorities have stated that four decapitated goats might not, after all, be the work of Pagans.

Four goats have been found brutally killed over the past few months near the town of Walton Beach. Last month, when the second goat was found, there was some speculation as to whether it was part of "an occult ceremony". However, now it seems officials aren't so sure

"The lack of blood has left investigators wondering whether the decapitations are something other than a pagan worship rite of some sort," according to Dee Thompson-Poirrier of the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society. She went on to say that the perpetrators were either "performing very old pagan rituals" (thus clarifying for those of us who perform more contemporary, non-goat-related rites) or that whoever was "making a sacrifice in this form... is highly immature or unintelligent."

Nice to see she's changed her opinion, rather than continuing the Oh My Gawd It Must Be the Work of Devil Worshippers theory. I'm wondering, though, why when this sort of thing happens people automatically push the big red Satanic Panic button, rather than going with the far more likely scenario of Sick Teenagers Getting Their Jollies in a Creepy Way. Here's to hoping they catch this person (or people) soon.

I love goats, wish to own a couple for milk and cheese someday. As a Pagan, I know of NO Pagans who do this, completely unheard of.

Ahhhhhh…but doesn’t it make better headlines to blame it on the “Devil-Worshippin’Witches”… Yeah…it’s very sad, but on going.

I feel bad for the goats, but why does it always come down to ‘devil worship’.

So typical.

Decapitated goats (along with whole fruit) occationally wash up on the beach here in South Florida, too. I’ve seen one myself. Could it be from rituals performed by followers of VooDoo or Santeria? There are large Haitian, Dominican, and other island communities here.
