Updates on Sioux City Murders

Thursday January 10, 2008
The other day, I blogged about the heinous case of Larry Harris, accused of murdering his two young stepdaughters. Harris' case gained attention right off the bat because he attributed the deaths to "witchcraft gone bad", which was almost immediately refuted publicly by several scholars. What intrigues me about this case is how the local press seems to be doing a reasonably good job of keeping their stories fair and objective, rather than going for the sensationalist approach.

To wit, a report from an area news channel, in which an Actual Wiccan is interviewed, in an attempt to dispel the negative stereotypes. Also, a report from another station which interviews a Wiccan high priest as well as a professor of religious studies.

Although Harris has described himself as Pagan, it's not clear exactly what he was doing with the girls when they were killed. The children's bodies were found by emergency personnel responding to a fire call at the Harris home. It will be interesting to see how the media continues to portray Harris as this case progresses.
